Motorhome accessory review: Vango Rhone Driveaway Awning

Vango's new drive-away awning - the Rhone

We’re all thinking it – if you want more space, buy a bigger motorhome. But, that’s not always possible, so an awning may be the answer and driveaway awnings like this provide the flexibility of allowing you to leave it on your pitch while you go off exploring.

The Rhone is one of a range of inflatable awnings from Vango.

It provides extra storage space and, with a footprint of 3.2m by 4.65m, it provides a big lounge area that has a feeling of being outdoors while under shelter thanks to its large windows.

You’ll need good shoulders to inflate the awning with the supplied double-action pump (or buy a 12V pump) and then you just attach it to your ’van using a variety of methods: pre-attached 6mm Kador awning piping, over-vehicle straps, roof bar attachment tabs and a sleeve for pole and clamp (pole and clamps are an optional extra).

The breathable, polycotton fabric is waterproof and has UV protection that is claimed to resist heat better and ensure the awning colour will stay greyer for longer. It also has a sewn-in groundsheet, curved beams for better headroom, mesh doors and a zipped point to feed the hook-up cable through if needed.

There are two versions: the £1,275 Low (for vehicles from 1.80m to 2.10m high) and the £1,350 Tall (2.45m to 2.90m).
