Traditional two-berth layouts have, over the last decade or so, been overtaken in popularity by small fixed-bed caravans. Yet there is still a case – and a market – for two-berth tourers. There are 13 from which to choose in the mainstream manufacturer sector, plus some ultra-lightweight ones from Poland, and even one from Turkey. Some are eye-catchingly innovative – even quirky – in design; others classic. Like the three from Swift. There’s the baby of the bunch, the Sprite Compact, just over 2m wide and 3.66m in body length. There’s this one, the Sprite Alpine 2, standard width at 2.25m and 4.34m in body length. And there’s also one in the Challenger range, slightly larger and 192kg heavier.
The Alpine 2 isn’t the lightest, or the cheapest in its class – but it does have an important distinguishing item on the kit list; it’s the only one with a Thetford 142-litre tall fridge with 15-litre freezer compartment; that’s 44 litres more chill space than a standard under-counter fridge. So, if fridge space is a priority for you, the Alpine 2 will zoom to the top of your shortlist.
There’s a lot more to like about this classic two-berth, as we discovered when we visited Preston Caravans & Motorhomes. Alpine is one of the oldest names in caravans – stretching back to the 1960s – and Sprite is even older, going back into the dawn of modern-day tourer time. Both names have built their reputation on lightweight and value; factors that hold true today. And, for 2025, Sprite added a new layer to its value appeal, with the introduction of a version called Exclusive. It’s available to only a few retailers, of which Preston Caravans is one.
Sprite Exclusives’ specification enhancements compared with standard Sprites include an alarm with key fob operation, a wireless phone charging pads set into the windowsill, a 120W solar panel, extra lighting, notably under the pelmets in the lounge, a barbecue point and an exterior mains socket. They also have the ATC stability control system that applies the caravan brakes automatically if the system detects the first sign of a swaying motion induced, perhaps, by high wind. The extra spec adds £560 to the price – but when you consider that the ATC system alone costs £495 and an alarm system is £260, if you were to buy it with a standard Sprite as an optional extra, the Exclusive package has got to be regarded as great value.
The Alpine 2 is only 4.34m in body length but it packs in some spacious features. The amount of kitchen workspace is one. With the 36cm by 34cm extension hinged up, the length of the kitchen becomes 1.55m long; that’s with the (three burner plus hot plate) hob top down, of course. The sink is huge, at 38cm in diameter. And opposite there is more surface, measuring 76cm by 56cm. Kitchen storage spaces matches the surface supremacy, with a double-doored cabinet in the main kitchen area, containing two shelf spaces, a small, metal two-drawer section, and space beneath it, plus a massive cutlery drawer (65cm wide) above it. Opposite, the dresser cabinet is 77cm wide and contains two shelf spaces. Television connections are within the cabinet and there is a circular aperture in the surface through which to feed cables.
We love the spacious feeling of the lounge with its long sofas (1.8m and 1.9m). Somehow the absence of curtains on the side windows adds to the airy feeling. That’s one of the differences between the standard Sprites, which have curtains, and the exclusives, which have upholstered panels on each side of the Windows. Exclusives have four cushions rather than two; that’s two with a dark grey sheen fabric and two with a watermark pattern involving white, grey and fawn. These style points really enhance the appeal of the exclusives.
The washroom incorporates the wardrobe, which has a 30cm wide rail and 1.3m of hanging depth. There’s a 42cm wide cabinet under the sink. Style points here are a grey rock-effect lining in the shower cubicle; so on-trend, and a huge mirror, with two spotlights focusing down from above it.

Our Verdict
If you are looking for a caravan just for two, and you want a measure of exclusivity – and added value – the Alpine 2 easily earns a place on your shortlist, especially if you are looking for a compact caravan with a large fridge. Kitchen surface is super-generous, with space on both sides of the caravan, and the lounge has a lovely airy feel.
