The importance of CRiS registration

bde46d2d-c55e-41d2-9202-4744129fcc19

The Central Registration and Identification Scheme (CRiS) is reminding caravan owners of the importance of registering their caravan with the database

Established in 1992, CRiS provides touring caravan owners with a registration certificate linking them to the national register of UK-manufactured caravans – much like the DVLA for cars.

Last year, CRiS handled 48,000 registration documents, but it is reminding owners that if their caravan is not registered, and is stolen and later recovered by the police, there is a risk that the owner may not have their caravan returned, as the police would not know who to contact.

Many insurance companies also require a touring caravan to be CRiS registered before processing a claim.

Kelly Surtees, Operations Director at CRiS, says,

Registering a touring caravan with CRiS is proof that you are the bona fide keeper. CRiS registration links a caravan’s unique 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to a CRiS keeper record. In the event of theft, the police use scanners to identify a stolen caravan by checking its VIN which can reveal the keepers’ details 24/7.

A CRiS check is also recommended for those buying a secondhand caravan as it will confirm the name of the registered keeper, whether the caravan has ever been reported as stolen, if it has any outstanding finance, or whether it has been written off by insurers in the past. A CRiS check can be carried out online for £17.95.

CRIS registration currently costs a one-off fee of £19.95 and lasts for the duration of your ownership. For those purchasing a new caravan, UK dealers will automatically register the new owner’s details with CRiS.
