Campsite of the Month: Top Lodge

Base yourself in this lovely meadow, surrounded by woodland, for a wonderful country break
Location: Stamford, Lincolnshire
Club: The Caravan and Motorhome Club
Imagine waking up to the scurrying of squirrels in the treetops, red kites soaring overhead, the wind gently shaking the leaves, ferns unfurling and the lulling sound of birdsong. From your pitch at Top Lodge, close to the Lincolnshire/Northants border, you can watch the day unfold and marvel as all life awakes.
Situated within the Forestry Commission's Fineshade Woods, this site is perfect for nature lovers and those who enjoy leisurely cycle rides, walking under a woodland canopy, and eating cake. The latter courtesy of the café, just beside the campsite.
With no wash block, you'll need to be pretty self-sufficient – remember this before you set out to explore the excellent, but muddy, mountain bike trails at neighbouring Wakerley Woods.
Days Out
If you fancy a cleaner day out, hop in the car to Stamford.
This Georgian market town gives the Cotswolds a run for its money with gorgeous stone buildings and stunning Burghley House with its magnificent parkland and its fun-filled Garden of Surprises (prepare to get wet!).
The historic city of Peterborough is a 30-minute drive away, with its beautiful cathedral and many shops and restaurants.
Ferry Meadows Country Park is a couple of miles from Peterborough city centre, and well worth a visit for its lakes, walks, boating and birdwatching. There's also cycle and canoe hire, and a decent café. A little farther to the north, Rutland Water offers similarly outdoorsy days out.
