Caravan security: a guide to protecting your caravan

Whether you’re pitched up at a rural site, stored for the winter, or parked at home between adventures, caravan security should never be an afterthought. Just like you’d lock up your home, your caravan deserves the same protection – not only for the valuables inside but for the caravan itself.

Modern caravans are often fitted with high-value appliances, smart technology and personal gear, making them a growing target for thieves. And, unfortunately, poor security can lead to costly insurance claims, holiday disruption or even total loss.

But the good news? With a few smart steps and the right equipment, you can make your caravan a fortress.

Why caravan security matters

Deters theft

  • Visible security devices are proven to discourage opportunistic thieves

Protects your investment

  • Caravans are high-value assets. Securing them properly ensures peace of mind

Reduces insurance costs

  • Most insurers offer discounts when approved locks or tracking systems are in use

Prevents emotional loss

  • Beyond money, your caravan holds memories. Losing it can be devastating

Five ways to improve your caravan security

Fit a wheel clamp

A high-quality wheel clamp is one of the simplest, most effective theft deterrents.

Bright, heavy-duty models are difficult to remove and send a strong visual message to would-be thieves.

Use a hitch lock

A strong hitch lock makes it difficult for thieves to tow your caravan away. For best results, combine with a wheel clamp.

Add alarms and sensors

Motion sensors and entry alarms provide instant notification of tampering. A small investment that adds a big layer of security.

Secure your windows and doors

Reinforced locks, latches and window alarms reduce easy access points – especially if you’re storing your caravan unattended for longer periods.

Install a GPS tracker

This is where smart tech steps up.

A caravan tracker allows you and the authorities to locate your caravan quickly if it’s stolen. Some devices link directly to your phone, sending real-time updates. Trackers allow you and the police to locate your caravan quickly if it’s stolen. Some devices link directly to your phone, sending real-time location updates.

Moving Intelligence Mi01 All-Inclusive – peace of mind, built in

When it comes to protecting your caravan, the Mi01 All-Inclusive by Moving Intelligence offers something few others can: total recovery confidence with no ongoing fees.

Unlike conventional GPS trackers that rely on live signals (and often come with subscription costs), the Mi01 is designed as a smart recovery system – always ready, but near impossible for thieves to detect. With a three-year internal battery, roaming connectivity across the UK and Europe, and no subscription required, this compact unit works quietly in the background until it’s needed most.

Here’s how it works:

The Mi01 checks in once a day, staying hidden and secure. If your caravan is stolen, Moving Intelligence activates the unit remotely, switching to a higher-frequency tracking mode and launching its UK-based recovery team to work directly with local police.

The result, Moving Intelligence tells us, is a 94% recovery rate.

Is installation straightforward for retrofitting on older caravans?

  • Our nationwide engineers provide mobile installation. The installation is covert and the process takes around an hour. Some battery-powered devices can be self-installed by the client in a matter of minutes.

What kind of app or interface is provided for monitoring?

  • All of our caravan trackers come with a dedicated mobile app which allows the customer to check the location of their asset along with some other handy features.

Moving Intelligence answers some of your most frequent questions

What is the typical battery life of your tracking devices, and how are the batteries recharged?

The new Mi01 All-inclusive has a battery life of three years. No need for recharging.

Why can’t I see the live location of my Mi01?

The Mi01 tracking device operates differently from, for example, a GPS tracker designed for travel luggage or a live tracking system. They are specifically designed to become active after theft, enabling tracking and recovery. So, the Mi01 is not a live tracker, but a recovery system.

Why does the Mi01 Tracer ‘sleep’?

The tracking device sends out just one signal every 24 hours. This means the location you see in the platform or app may be up to 23 hours old. This isn’t a fault, it’s a deliberate choice to maximise the security and lifespan of the system. If your vehicle is stolen, we immediately switch to a much higher frequency, allowing us to track it almost in real time.

No signal for thieves?

Because the Mi01 only sends out one signal per day, there is no constant connection for thieves to intercept or disrupt, making sabotage nearly impossible.

Why one ping per day?

This daily check-in is for system monitoring. Moving Intelligence technicians can ensure your device is working properly and take action if anything goes wrong.

Is installation straightforward – especially for older caravans?

This advanced recovery system comes in a compact size and is easy to install, making it an ideal solution for any vehicle it fits. So yes, also for older caravans.

Installation steps:
• For the best GPS/GSM reception, the Mi01 should be mounted horizontally, and you should ensure the caravan is outdoors.
• Mount the tracker in a non-obvious location.
• The location of the tracker should not be accessible without needing to use tools.
• Do not place the Mi01 directly on or alongside metal or cable looms – leave a gap of at least five centimetres.

Are there any caravan-specific features or benefits that set your products apart?

Absolutely. At Moving Intelligence, we understand that caravans have unique security challenges, such as being unattended for long periods, stored off-site or towed by different vehicles. Our products are specifically tailored to address these concerns.

Key caravan-specific advantages include:

  • Standalone power supply: Devices like the Mi01 All-inclusive are fully independent of the vehicle’s power system, making them ideal for caravans in storage or parked off-grid.
  • No visible wiring or antennae: Our discreet design reduces the risk of detection and tampering, especially important for unguarded sites or seasonal locations.
  • Silent operation: Unlike visible alarms or live trackers, our recovery devices stay silent and undetectable. The ideal set-up for static caravans or those stored for extended periods.
  • Specialist recovery team: In the event of theft, our UK-based team works closely with local police to retrieve your caravan as quickly and safely as possible.

Whether your caravan is at home, at a seasonal pitch, or in long-term storage, our systems are engineered to protect it quietly, reliably and without the hassle of ongoing subscriptions.

Are there ongoing subscription fees, and what do they include?

No subscription fee.

All the features that come with it:

  • iOS and Android app
  • Thatcham S7 certified
  • Battery-operated device
  • Self-install / installed options available
  • GPS, GSM and RF positioning
  • Waterproof IP67
  • 24hr call centre support
  • Anti-scan technology
  • Covert design

With over 25 years of experience in leisure security, Moving Intelligence understands better than anyone how difficult it can be to find the right security product. Bonus tip: register with CRiS

The Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CRiS) is the official UK registration for caravans.

Registering makes recovery easier if stolen and provides proof of ownership, which insurers and law enforcement may require.
