Full Review
Many years ago, I lived and worked in south Somerset. It was obviously a lovely part of the country, but as a 20-something, I admit I didn’t fully appreciate its rural charms.
A couple of decades later, I returned for the first time and was blown away. It turns out my idea of a good time had changed somewhat from those hedonistic days.
I’m now far more interested in a pub that does good food and nice beer rather than special offers on shots. And an interesting museum, followed by a good walk in the country and an early night, appeals much more than an all-day sesh that stretches into the early hours.
Luckily, Somerset is blessed with good pubs, quirky museums and beautiful countryside… and Long Hazel is the perfect base to explore it all from.
This relaxing adults-only site, member of the Premier Parks group, is just 100 yards from a village pub and a bus stop, so you don’t even need to get behind the wheel of your ’van to take advantage of the local area.
It’s all very idyllic around here and that sense of tranquillity is equally present at Long Hazel. Husband and wife owners, Alan and Pamela Walton, have been running the site for almost 30 years and they provide a warm welcome.
Facilities on site are immaculate; you’ll find a recently renovated toilet and shower block, laundry facilities, an accessible wet room and WiFi. The site also welcomes – in fact, encourages – daily deliveries from local businesses such as a bakery and farm shop.
Long Hazel is set in the village of Sparkford, also home to the Haynes Motor Museum, which is under a mile away and ideal for motor enthusiasts. About 10 miles away, Montacute House, near my old stomping ground of Yeovil, is surrounded by beautifully kept gardens and orchards. Inside, its Long Gallery — the longest of its kind in England — showcases an impressive collection of Tudor and Elizabethan portraits.
For walkers, the 290-mile Macmillan Way passes through South Cadbury, just two miles away. Also here you will find Cadbury Castle, a hilltop site containing the remains of an Iron Age hill fort with associations with King Arthur and Camelot, along with views across the Somerset Levels.
