Description

This small and perfectly maintained Italian campsite is reminiscent of a French Passion site, taking no more than 10 motorhomes at any time. The facilities are superb and each pitch enjoys sensational views across the vineyard, with the hills of Northern Italy beyond.

Full Review

"Heaven on earth" is how we would describe Al Rocol, a small campsite attached to the vineyard of the same name, tucked deep in the foothills of the Italian Lakes.

The campsite is more reminiscent of a France Passion site, taking no more than 10 motorhomes at any time. Facilities include a small but perfectly formed service point with grey waste, chemical toilet drop and fresh water. Each pitch has its own water and electricity supply.

There are male and female washrooms with shower, toilet and sinks. There are even ports for charging electric bikes and EVs down near reception.

The site slopes gently with large pitches situated under the shade of trees. Each is no more than a few feet from the vines, so the view when you wake up is magnificent.

The campsite also boasts rescued animals, including rabbits and two donkeys that wander the hillside.

Better still is the lovely swimming pool complete with sunbeds, shades and loungers, free to those camping. The campsite is immaculate with friendly, multilingual staff who go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable.

There are signed walks that zigzag into the hills between the rows of vines and olive groves.

The campsite produces red and white wines with tasting and tours available. It also boasts its own olive oil which has to be tasted to be believed – with a fresh piece of focaccia, naturally! There is a large restaurant offering a small but varied menu. Breakfast can also be taken here.

In the area, Lake Iseo is probably the main attraction and is only 12 miles from the site. There are cycle routes but we found these a little confusing, never being sure whether we were heading the right way or down somebody’s drive, so we stuck to the quiet side roads that ramble through pretty villages.

To explore the lake, probably the best thing to do is head for the nearby Lidl, around which there are numerous places to park up for a day by the lake. The town itself is ornate and very relaxed in true Italian style, with many coffee shops and bars lining the waterfront.

Our Verdict

While this campsite only takes 10 vehicles at any one time, the standard of the facilities and service are superb. The dramatic setting that Al Rocol finds itself in elevates the camping experience to a new level – this is well worth a diversion on your next trip to Italy.
