Description

In its pictured fluorescent colour that Berghaus has called ‘spark’, a glance is all you really need to notice the Berghaus Remote Hike M23 walking rucksack, new for 2025. The black waist strap and shoulder straps make for a striking contrast to the storage area, which opens up incredibly wide. It’s adjustable in ways you wouldn’t think are necessary, but appreciate nonetheless, lighter than you would initially expect for a 23-litre bag, and, more than anything, durable for how thin the eco-friendly Seawastex main fabric is.

Full Review

The bag has many external storage options and one expandable front pocket, which is open at the front, but kept relatively closed with a single adjustable clip on the centre. At the top, next to a handle, you’ll find a small compartment that tend to be standard procedure on all rucksacks – the kind in which you’ll automatically place your keys, phone, and other essential items. There are also two expandable side pockets on each side for water bottles, two on the chest straps, and two zipped belt pockets, too.

The main compartment has a durable YKK zip entry for easy access with adjustable toggles and clips on both sides allowing you to either maximise the space in your bag, or slim down the shape as much as possible.

The space inside is more than adequate for a hiking day trip. The bag was tested during a brisk two-lap training walk of Rutland Water, in the county of Rutland, where I completed 37 miles of walking. This means snacks and water were required in abundance, and more than enough could be carried for the journey. The long distance also brought to life how valuable the waist straps are. Prolonged use can often make a bag gradually feel heavier than it actually is. However, utilising the thick waist strap removes this slumping feeling, leaving you as keen as ever to kick on along the trail.

A standout feature is without a doubt the Freeflow technology back support, making your experience cooler and, overall, far more pleasant. The gap it provides between your back and the pack reduces sweat around the area and prevents uncomfortable rubbing. The space in between does not impact your pack's stability, or its comfort in while being used, primarily thanks to the waist belt which, when used correctly, will support your pack's weight on your hips in a comfortable manner.

Our Verdict

In a nutshell, this walking rucksack does everything we would expect from a 23-litre bag. It is robust, durable, and ergonomically designed to sit comfortably all day long on your back.

If action-packed day trips exploring the trails is your hobby of choice, then the Berghaus Remote Hike 23 is the tool for you. It’s light, breathable and packs a punch in terms of what you can fit inside. It goes without saying that if visibility is an essential to you on the trails, then bags don’t come much brighter.
