Introduction: Camping destinations in Scotland
Scotland's magnificent mountains, vast lochs, atmospheric glens and stunning coastline make it one of the best places on the planet to enjoy the natural world. It is a haven for lovers of the outdoors and a mecca for those who enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities and sports, from hillwalking to mountain climbing, gentle cycling to exhilarating mountain bike rides and loch kayaking to whitewater rafting.
Scotland is rich in culture and history and that is reflected in its traditional and modern architecture. It also has some of the best shopping in the UK, while its restaurants take advantage of fine local produce. And no camping trip to Scotland would be complete without a visit to a distillery to sample some of the famous whisky.
The Highlands of Scotland
The Highlands and islands is famous for its mountains, lochs castles and glens, but gorgeous white sandy beaches abound here, too, and the water has a clarity you often associate more with the tropics than the United Kingdom. The sun can often put in an appearance and when it does you could be mistaken for thinking you were in the Mediterranean rather than the far north of Europe.
Although the north of Scotland is not an area full of family-friendly attractions and theme parks, there’s plenty to see and do on a touring holiday here. Don’t miss the incredible landscapes of Glencoe and Ben Nevis, or follow the Speyside whisky trail to sample the 'water of life'. And, of course, see if you can spot the evasive monster in the vast waters of Loch Ness.
The islands of Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles provide yet more spectacular scenery for you to enjoy on a Scottish camping trip.
Central Scotland
Further south, Perthshire boasts spectacular scenery, especially in autumn, when the colours are truly spectacular.
The great cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh offer culture, architecture and shopping in equal measure and they are within easy reach of the attractions of central Scotland, like Loch Lomond, Strirling and the Wallace Monument and the Kelpies.
Ayrshire and Argyll also boast lovely beaches and provide access to the islands off the west coast.
Southern Scotland
Despite its wonderful scenery and pleasant climate, the southwest corner of Scotland is a region that is inexplicably overlooked by most holidaymakers.
But for campers this is a hidden gem of a destination. Its coastline boasts sandy beaches, rocky coves and quaint fishing villages while inland there are challenging hills and hundreds of square miles of forestry and gently rolling countryside ideal for cycling enthusiasts.
At night, the inky dark skies make it a brilliant place for amateur star-gazers to view celestial displays. And like most of Scotland it has a rich and fascinating history.
