Camp Katur
Set in a large wooded and grassy area of the Camp Hill estate, near Masham in North Yorkshire, Camp Katur has a huge variety of accommodation, including tipis, bell tents, geodomes, Hobbit pods and safari tents.
There’s even a retro-style 1980s caravan called Betty. They call it “off-grid” camping with a touch of luxury. The accommodation is spread out over a wide area, giving each group plenty of privacy. And for that authentic glamping feel, there’s an outdoor woodfired hot tub – ideal for relaxing with a glass of champagne – a sauna and a Nordic barbecue cabin. It feels very much like getting back to nature – and far closer to “genuine” camping than many people would think.
Toilets, showers and cooking facilities are available in a communal area, with the safari tents and Bear Place lodge enjoying private facilities.
There’s no electricity in any of the accommodation so lanterns and torches are essential – you’re provided with one lamp but you’d be advised to bring your own extras, especially if you’re out on the site at night.
The site boasts loads of outdoor activities including, among others, a tree top adventure course, quad biking, water ball zorbing, Segway rides, clay pigeon shooting, archery, a climbing wall and zip wire. These all involve an extra charge but if you don’t want to spend any more money, there is an excellent, free, adventure playground where the youngsters can build outdoor shelters as well as tackling the obstacles.
