Premium quality and some novel design from Slovenia

Tourne is a new name in the UK but it’s already making a name for itself with its top-quality, Peugeot Boxer-based campervans. It offers two ranges – Cruise and the more upmarket Select – each with a choice of six-metre or 6.36m lengths, the latter allowing a bigger rear bedroom.

The Select is new this season and benefits from more elaborate furniture and a higher-spec base vehicle. It comes only with the potent 180hp motor and eight-speed automatic transmission, while a host of extra standard kit includes front fog/cornering lights, a wireless phone charger, reversing camera, digital instrumentation, automatic climate control, 10in touchscreen, lane keeping, attention assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control and the electric parking brake. White is the standard colour, with this Thunder Grey costing £571 extra.

The alloy wheels, restrained graphics and flush double-glazed habitation windows make a good first impression, but it’s the winterisation that’s really worthy of note. The underslung 100-litre waste water tank is extremely well insulated, as well as being 

heated from the Webasto diesel blown-air system. The fresh water tank is, of course, inboard, while underfloor heating adds an extra touch of luxury for winter camping. Then there’s the 15mm to 32mm of ArmaFlex Ace Plus insulation that lines the interior of the Peugeot panel van and 30mm of XPS insulation in the floor.

Open the rear barn doors and you’ll find the usual storage space that’s a given with this type of layout; if you want to get bikes on board you can fold the centre panels of the bed to one side for full-height storage. There are fixed lashing points on the floor and the bulkhead at the front of the space can be slid to one side to allow longer loads inside. 

On board the Tourne Select it’s another European fixed bed layout with a half-dinette lounge and transverse rear double bed. But don’t turn the page yet, because there’s appeal here beyond the Scandinavian-style design. Everything is very high quality and the more shapely cabinets (compared with the Cruise range) look attractive.

Up front, Tourne retains the overcab shelf, rather than adding an overcab window, but the dinette is well-lit and the bench seat offers good comfort for rear passengers. There’s an extra seat, too, which simply slides out from the end of the galley. It steals no kitchen storage and its cushion can stow above the cab; it allows five to sit around the table or can be a footstool for the swivelled driver’s chair. The table also extends, not with the usual swing-out panel but with a slot-in piece that fits like a jigsaw puzzle – another example of the craftsmanship here.

Another novelty is the Dream4 system which gives you four berths without resorting to a pop-top (which would be counter-productive to all that winterisation). So, the dinette makes a bed using two of those ‘jigsaw’ pieces, the table and the slide-out footstool by the door. It’s easy to do – especially if you follow Tourne’s video – and the resultant bed is more than adequate for a couple of kids, especially as it comes with its own mattress topper. 

The kitchen has no lower cupboards, just large drawers that offer more practical storage. Cooking is on a two-burner hob – there’s no oven option – while the fridge is a 90-litre compressor model, positioned above the wardrobe. 

Opposite, the washroom has a tambour door that closes firmly onto a magnetic strip when travelling and there are practical details like the fiddle rails in the cupboard, the twin drains in the shower tray and the long hanging rail for drying wet gear. 
Other standard features on this model include a flyscreen on the sliding door, external barbecue point, 140W solar panel, Thule awning and towbar.

There’s a huge choice of these six-metre fixed bed campervans at a variety of different price points. The Tourne Select definitely sits at the upper end but justifies its £84k list price with great quality and plenty of clever details, as well as its superior credentials for winter camping.
