Full Review
Like so many others, Mark and Kyja Harris formed OXCampers as a hobby, with the business subsequently becoming a full-time occupation 14 years ago. Throughout that time, OX has concentrated mainly on VWs, firstly T4s, progressing through T5s and T6s to its first T7 shown here.
It runs a hire fleet of five T6.1s and finds that the rental business often brings in customers who want to try the lifestyle before committing to buying their own campervan.
The company is still converting T6s, as well as the new Transporter, but vans are sourced by its customers. From there, OX offers a range of services (and prices) to suit different needs.
Part conversions, roof fitting and kitchen upgrades are possible, right up to its top-spec Sennen conversion here at £18,000 (including VAT).
Comfortable roof bed
That sounds like a very keen figure but OX doesn’t skimp on the products it fits. Most of its campers have the German SCA roof as, in Mark’s words, “It’s the most expensive but the best.” He particularly points to hirers enjoying the comfortable roof bed, while resale values are enhanced by such a premium pop-top. Not only does the bed have a sprung base but there’s a dimmable LED strip light around the perimeter of the lid.
The standard seat/bed system for the Sennen is the popular RIB but this T7 has the Mobiframe, which is a £2,500 upgrade. Mark describes this sliding seat as a game changer and fits a unit with a third floor rail, so that an extra removable single seat (complete with Isofix and swivel base) can be added for those needing five seatbelts.
Bamboo worktop
Other extras fitted to this demonstrator are the Autoterm diesel-fired blown-air heating (£950) and Vanshades blinds (£300) – curtains are standard. This example also has a smart-looking SavvyVan touchscreen control panel, rather than the simpler Sargent unit that’s usually fitted out of sight.
It's a nicely finished conversion with a wide range of furniture finishes available – all CNC-cut in-house. The worktop here is bamboo but oak is typically used. A practical touch is the sliding tambour doors for all the main kitchen cupboards, so everything can be accessed whichever position the seat is in and even when the bed is folded down – so often that’s not the case when sliding seats are employed.
Night-time knick-knacks
The lower bed is easy to make and its mattress measures 1.92m by 1.12m (width is 1.23m from the cabinets to the wall). There’s a large drawer for extra storage under the seat and, alongside, the good-sized wardrobe includes a shelf inside as well as a practical lipped shelf on top for night-time knick-knacks.
A Porta Potti can be stored in the boot. Open the tailgate and you’ll also see hooks to hang coats in the offside corner – that’s the sort of detail that’s come from Mark’s experience using his campervans for family holidays.
The galley has a two-burner hob and sink combination unit from Dometic, with gas (one Campingaz cylinder) correctly stored in a steel box (in a kitchen cupboard). Water is piped from a portable container in the neighbouring locker.
The fridge, another Dometic component, is a 50-litre compressor model here, but other options such as top-loading fridges are offered.
Off-grid power
Interestingly, Mark usually prefers not to fit solar panels (due to experience with unreliability) but the standard 280Ah Fogstar lithium battery makes up for that, providing enough off-grid power for most customers.
OXCampers can also supply and fit Fiamma awnings and it offers various body styling options for those seeking a sportier look. If you’re tempted to find out more, the firm only builds around two campers a month, so you’re assured of personal attention down in Marlborough.
