Full Review

It’s the Lounge models with their U-shaped seating and electric drop-down beds that have grabbed the headlines since this Slovenian maker of high-end campervans arrived on the UK market. Then there are no less than seven 4x4 models saying ‘look at me, look at me!’.

But when I walked onto Mega Mobil’s extensive stand at last September’s Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, it was the Classic 600 Twin that I was pointed towards.
There are MAN and Mercedes-based models in Mega’s fixed bed Classic line-up but the 600 Twin is built on Fiat or Peugeot six-metre panel vans and it’s not just the classic (pun intended!) rear fixed bed layout. This one does things a little differently.

Huge bed

For a start, there’s no half-dinette, so no rear travel seats. This is a pure two-berth, but that’s not to say that the cab area isn’t used on site. Both front chairs swivel and there’s a very neat table that slides out and flips over so that you can comfortably have breakfast here without disturbing the bedroom.

And we wouldn’t blame anyone wanting a lie-in when sleeping in a Mega Classic 600 Twin. The rear bed, in which you sleep lengthways, is a HUGE 1.95m by 1.87m.

It’s made up in three sections, with the forward third created with a portion of bed slats that slide away when not required to reveal a two-seater dinette with a swing-out table that can also disappear under the bed. You can even retain the dining area and still have a 1.87m by 1.38m transverse bed.

Then there’s the under-bed garage that can be extended by raising the rearmost section of the bed, which also creates a king-sized chaise longue inside! There’s also a removable division to stop your gear sliding from the garage into the living area, while pockets on the rear doors can accommodate outdoor chairs.

Wet zone

Behind a tambour door, the washroom has a feature that we love in other Mega Mobil models – a clear screen that swings around to cover the cassette toilet and basin and create a self-contained wet zone for showering. Here, there’s a neat slide-away washbasin, too, to give you more room to use the loo.

After all this clever stuff, you might expect the kitchen to include a dishwasher and air fryer but it’s all rather conventional. Don’t be disappointed, though, because the solidity and quality of Mega’s cabinetwork is impressive, including the sturdy worktop extension.

The two-burner hob and sink combination unit with glass lids is standard campervan fare but the selection of five drawers for storage is so much better than an array of cupboards. Opposite is an 84-litre Thetford compressor fridge.

Sheer amount of choice

The spec of this campervan includes Truma Combi D 6 E diesel/electric heating (as part of an optional Winter Pack that also adds a heated floor and insulated waste water tank), two 95Ah AGM leisure batteries and 80-litre fresh and waste water tanks.

The show model, however, was loaded with options, too, so it would be easy to head a long way north of the £73,369 starting price – in this case, to around £88k.

Those stylish 18in Borbet alloy wheels with Continental all-weather tyres don’t come cheap, and nor does the Thule VeloSwing which allows you to carry e-bikes on a towbar rack that swivels out of the way to access the rear barn doors. There were too many other extras to list here…

But that’s one of the beauties of a Mega Mobil – the sheer amount of choice available. There are eight choices of exterior paint colour, 13 furniture options, five worktops and four floors. Then there’s the upholstery – with Mega’s background in fabrics it’s perhaps less surprising to find 31 options and six areas in which different materials can be chosen.
