The Rimor Kilig 50

Italian brand, Rimor, is best known for its entry-level motorhomes and even more so for its family-friendly layouts, so it has a USP in a marketplace where many models are aimed at couples. The new Kilig range follows that form and slots in below the existing Evo, which is also built on the Ford Transit.

We’ve already reviewed the compact Kilig 4, but this model is rather different, offering berths for six and a unique layout that’s sure to appeal to big families (and probably hire fleets).

It’s an overcab model at a time when many manufacturers have switched to building low-profiles with drop-down beds above the lounge. However, that format often has a few compromises in a family vehicle. Storage is likely to be reduced and the bed may impact access in and out of the habitation door and use of the galley when deployed. Should you want a low-profile, the Kilig range does have options, but not with this layout.

The layout

Here, you can instantly see this is not a traditional layout. The lounge has not one but two L-shaped sofas, forming an almost entirely square seating space. There are two rear-facing travel seats and two more facing forwards, so there are six belted pews in total.

For dining, a large table folds in half and slides fore and aft, as well as side to side, to allow access through. There’s also a small slide-out surface by the rear-facing seats that would make a lovely coffee table.

The overcab bed

The overcab bed is a generous size (2.00m by 1.40m) and has a window at the foot and reading lights at the head. And, because the lounge is not needed for extra berths, the ladder can be left in situ overnight.

The kitchen

The central kitchen is very simple; there’s a three-burner hob and circular sink with ample storage above and below (an oven is likely to be added for the UK). A cutlery tray is provided but, to optimise the galley’s cupboard space, it will need some form of crate organisation.

Teal accent colours are found throughout, including a board with pegs and grips for notes or hanging utensils. Opposite, you’ll find the wardrobe and 141-litre fridge.

The bunks

But the reason to buy is further back, where you’ll find two pairs of bunks – yes, that’s berths for four here. Each bed is 2m long and at least 79cm wide – big enough for adults! Both top bunks get their own ladder, too, while each berth has its own curtain for privacy.

The washroom

The only downside to this layout is its washroom, which is squeezed in between the bunk beds. It’s a rather compact space, although it does have a big window and a roof vent.

It’s an all-in-one affair, with the shower curtain closing over three sides and only one drain, so you may prefer to use campsite shower facilities. The little room does also have a small mirror to one side and a high-level locker above the window, along with a smaller cubby below the basin.

Storage

In terms of storage for the whole family’s gear, both bottom bunks can be folded up to maximise space, but, if you travel with big items (such as bikes or surfboards) in here, they’ll need to be stowed outside before bedtime.

The spec

Finally, on the road, the Ford Transit is routinely praised for the ergonomics of its dashboard and a more car-like seating position than the rival Fiat. This model has the 2-litre 130PS engine as standard and you also get cruise control, Hill Start Assist, driver and passenger airbags, a Bluetooth radio with steering wheel-mounted controls and cab air-con. Plus, you can specify the automatic gearbox for £2,600 and alloy wheels for £1,350.

Where to buy

Motorhomes and Caravans of Hull has long acted as the UK importer for this Italian brand, but it has appointed other outlets around the UK and it also operates a hire fleet, including a selection of Rimor models.

Other English dealers are Ashington Caravans in the northeast and Webbs Motor Caravans in Reading, Berkshire, plus new addition, E S Hartley at Ellesmere Port.

In Northern Ireland, Rimor is represented by Thompson Leisure. In Scotland, you can head to Motorhome Hub in Perth or Motorhome Sales Scotland in Glasgow.
