Look at the floorplan here and you’ll think this is a British motorhome – it’s even got the entrance door on the UK nearside.
But look at the décor and design and there are definite signs of continental flair.
The dark wood furniture with white centres to the cupboard doors is quite striking. Roller Team makes more changes to its vehicles for the UK than most other imported brands, and it continues to offer overcab coachbuilt models here. Low-profiles dominate but there are two Ford-based Zefiros with a luton, as well as this single Auto-Roller.
The layout is an old UK favourite featuring a front pullman dinette and a rear U-shaped lounge. It’s a six-berth with five seatbelts as a 3.5-tonne motorhome, or six belts when plated at 3,650kg.
Based on a Fiat Ducato chassis-cab with wide rear track and camping tyres, the 130bhp, Euro VI engine is standard, and spec includes Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold and Traction Plus. The 150bhp and 177bhp motors and the Comfort-Matic gearbox are optional. Load it up with six folk and all their gear and you might well yearn for the 150bhp engine to push that tall body through the air.
The key option is the Driver’s Pack. For £999 this adds cab air-conditioning, cruise control, radio with Bluetooth and steering wheel controls, passenger airbag and electric, heated mirrors.
You can also add the Thermo Pack (£1,120) with insulation and heating for the waste water tank, improved insulation and Truma Duo Control CS for en route heating. Not that Roller Teams are under-endowed in the bodywork stakes.
In fact, the company’s Evo Technology is impressive stuff – especially at this price level. Insulation is all Styrofoam, floor thickness is 54mm and perimeter protection is all extruded plastic.
It’s backed up by a 10-year body construction integrity warranty, and a five-year warranty on both the base vehicle and the conversion.
All 2017 Auto-Roller models also get enhanced spec. There’s a colour reversing camera with monitor, a 95Ah leisure battery, 120W solar panel, bike rack (for four bikes) and a flyscreen for the habitation door.
The rear lounge is the star of the show with its spacious 6ft settees converting at night into twin singles or a large double bed. Bolster cushions enhance seating comfort, Roman blinds adorn the windows and there’s a free-standing table for dining.
In the forward dinette there’s a wall-mounted table, while the habitation door is opposite.
The kitchen runs from the doorway back along the nearside wall and, with no full-height furniture on this side of the vehicle, the layout feels more open than in many rival models.
The galley includes a 90-litre fridge and an oven/grill, as well as plenty of worktop. Opposite the kitchen, the washroom has a separate wet area including the shower, washbasin and a duckboard on the floor. The latest style of swivel cassette toilet is fitted, too.
Finally, there’s a generous 2.02m by 1.60m overcab bed with an extra-large, opening skylight above.
