You’re probably not familiar with the name PLA, or its Plasy model range of motorhomes, but these are amongst the latest additions to the UK motorhome market, fresh from Italy

They are right-hand drive (with the habitation door on the continental side) and are based on Peugeot Boxer chassis-cabs. That’s an unusual choice for an imported model but it’ll hold no fears here, where the lion badge is well established in the market.

The Plasy line-up includes low-profile models with an island bed or fixed singles, but the most interesting variant is, perhaps, this P70 with bunk beds across the rear.

This is also the only overcab model in the range and, like the low-profiles, it has a very curvaceous roofline, sweeping up over the luton and dropping down towards the tail. It’s even more pronounced than on the low-profiles and PLA says it will allow rainwater to flow easily off the roof.

The Plasy P70’s layout is a variation on the family favourite of pullman dinette up front, washroom and galley towards the rear and concluding with transverse beds in the tail. We measured the rear bunks at 2.19m by 0.86m (top bed) and 2.09m by 0.86m (below). Each bed has an opening window, reading light and a privacy curtain.

At the opposite end, the Boxer cab comes with faux leather upholstery and a double-DIN head unit boasting 6in touchscreen, Bluetooth and an iPod socket. Power comes from the latest 130bhp Euro VI motor and equipment extends to air-conditioning, cruise control, ASR, ESP, Hill Holder, four-season tyres and front foglamps.

Overhead, the luton berth tips up on gas struts to allow an easy walk through to the living area and the external body shape ensures that there’s good headroom (up to 625mm) for the 2.14m by 1.60m bed. This will probably be the sleeping quarters for mum and dad and it comes with an opening window, roof vent and a single flexible-wand reading lamp.

With four people on board there’ll be no need to disturb the lounge, which can be converted into a lengthways bed if six berths are required. In which case, note that the rear-facing bench only has lap belts. Unusually, the pullman seating can also be turned into a less formal-looking U-shape, while an additional side settee makes this into a much better lounge than you’ll find in some rivals.

The kitchen comes with a three-burner hob and a Thetford 145-litre fridge/freezer with oven above, plus a decent amount of worktop space and lots of low-level storage.

The washroom is typically Italian with extensive use of plastic mouldings and a good-sized separate shower with triple recesses for shampoo, etc, but only one small drain hole.

Finally, there’s generous storage at the rear in a garage with chequerplate flooring. Headroom here is up to 1.45m with the lower bunk bed stowed, or 0.61m with it in situ.
