Here are the first fruits of WildAx becoming part of a much larger pan-European organisation, and the first British outpost of the French Rapido Group, which also owns manufacturers in Germany and Italy.

The Triton is the brand’s first entry into the VW Transporter-sized campervan market. It comes with a pop-top roof and a rear travel bench with two seatbelts.

Additionally, there’s a side-facing settee on the offside and a swivel passenger cab seat, so five happy campers can comfortably chill here. Optionally, the driver’s seat can rotate, too – if a fold-down handbrake is fitted. For a campervan of this size, the lounge is very spacious, indeed, with ample unobstructed floor space in the middle – perfect if you have a dog, or kids who like to play Twister!

At night, the side settee slides out and flattens to create a double bed that is said to measure 1.83m by 1.30m. Infill cushions are required to complete the mattress and these are stored in the seat bases, so you’ll need to check that there’s enough room left for bedding, etc.

A further double bed (that should measure 1.90m by 1.20m) lives in the elevating roof The Triton also has a rear tailgate. Lift that and you’ll see a bench cassette toilet on the nearside and a small Vitrifrigo compressor fridge above a tambour-doored cupboard on the offside.

There’s even a shower tray in the floor here with a shower curtain that’s held in position with press studs. It’s all part of WildAx’s aim to provide a full motorhome-type spec in a small campervan, so a gas/electric Truma water heater is included as standard.

The kitchen is typical of a campervan with no oven or grill, just a two-burner hob that’s part of a stainless-steel combination unit with the sink.

Galley storage is good, though, with four large drawers and a recess for five bottles, and there’s a very slim wardrobe between the travel seat and the loo.

Other noteworthy features of the Triton include pleated blinds on the sliding door windows and a pleasing lack of carpet trim around the glazing. A mix of Ford OEM and bespoke WildAx finish results in a more polished overall look. The demo van featured here is also further enhanced by leather upholstery, fancy alloy wheels and an automatic gearbox.

The WildAx lowdown

Based in Elland, West Yorkshire, WildAx build a range of van conversions based primarily on Fiat Ducato and Citroën Relay, but also the Renault Master and Mercedes Sprinter and now, the more compact Ford Transit Custom.

All their vehicles have European Whole Vehicle Type Approval as well as National Caravan Council approval.

 In addition to new and used campervan and motorhome sales, WildAx offer campervan hire, so you can try before you buy, just to be sure that both the lifestyle and the Triton are for you before committing.

Most significantly, in 2017, WildAx were acquired by the French Rapido Group, where the British brand joins a portfolio of specialist campervan marques including Dreamer, Stylevan and Westfalia.
