Full review

The Nissan NV200 is a great base vehicle for micro campervan conversions, as its length and width of 4.4m by 1.69m means it’s no larger than your average saloon car. At 1.89m high (with the pop-top down), it will also slip under most car park height-restrictor barriers.

Wiltshire-based Small Campervan specialise in building unique conversions on both new (from £24,995) and used (from £16,000) vans, meaning no two campervans are ever the same. A choice of options on the plywood finishes, fabrics, curtains and cushions mean you can customise your chosen camper to suit your own style, too.

The model pictured here is ideal for couples or solo campers, being a two-berth with two travel seats (four-belted travel seat versions are available). Roof wise, you can also choose from a fixed one, or a front (as shown here) or rear-hinged pop-top.

Both versions feature a side sofa made from lightweight plywood, which folds out to create a bed that’s claimed to measure 2m long by 1m wide. If you prefer, you can opt for a wider bed but the compromise is a smaller kitchen. The bed should be easy and quick to set up. Simply lift the hinged sections (under the cushions) over towards the kitchen unit where a ledge support takes the fold-over sections.

There’s a further support in the Porta-Potti (optional) cupboard, which ensures there’s enough strength within the bed to be able to sit on the edge of the bed, adjacent to the cool box.

The small but very usable kitchen unit is also built from lightweight plywood. It features a two-burner gas hob and a combi sink unit with a 12V water pump and a removable 12.5-litre water container under the kitchen unit. Glass lids over the sink and cooker provide extra workspace, and you have the option of adding a table.

Mains hook-up is provided at the rear of the van with a consumer unit in the back cupboard (with a double socket outlet in the kitchen unit) making things nice and easy to set up when you arrive at the campsite. There’s a gas cylinder located in the purpose-made cupboard at the nearside rear, for easy access. A leisure battery is positioned behind the driver’s seat and split- charging is provided, and you can request a solar panel, if required. A small thermoelectric cool box is also fitted. Storage space is available under the sofa, and in the kitchen and rear cupboards. LED lights are fitted in the roof and an extra spot lamp is positioned over the kitchen.

This particular camper comes with 8,000 miles on the clock and features cab air-conditioning, a satnav and a reversing camera in the stereo display unit.

Small Campervans were established back in the year 2000, at which time they were repairing and renovating small campervans and motorhomes based on the Bedford Rascal and Suzuki Supercarry vehicles.

Nowadays, the company carry out conversions on small vans and MPVs like the Fiat Doblò and Renault Kangoo, although they’ve favoured the Nissan NV200 in more recent times. “These are a small to medium-sized van and, in our opinion, are ideally suited to everyday use as a car and campervan,” says Tim Thornbury, owner of Small Campervan.

“We offer several different layouts, too – some are more suited to one or two persons. The layout of the van featured here gives lots of space and has a very easy-to-use bed, while the pop-up roof gives a good deal of headroom. The Nissan NV200 is a great base vehicle if you don't want or need a larger van. It’s also easy to drive and is excellent on fuel,” says Tim.
