Full review

Malibu, originally the van conversion brand from Carthago is now the entry-level marque from the maker from Aulendorf, offering a full line-up including A-classes. Its campervan range is comprehensive, though – as long as you want a fixed bed layout and a Fiat Ducato base vehicle.

Its newest interpretation of this classic continental theme is this, the Charming Coupé 600 DB.The name might imply sporty, lowered bodywork but, actually, the USP on the outside is the porthole bedroom windows at the back. More yacht than coupé, then.

Inside, the new Charming derivative gets high-level lockers and concealed indirect lighting that extend into the cab, merging the driving quarters with the living area behind. Malibu says the concept is to enable buyers to enjoy the drive of a campervan with the living space of a low-profile coachbuilt.

However, unlike the GT models which Malibu introduced a year ago, the Coupé doesn’t get an overcab sunroof, so externally it still looks like a standard Ducato.

The Van Charming Coupé also gets the company’s patented three-in-one flexi-bathroom with a cassette loo that slides away under the bed to create more room for showering. There’s no need for a curtain, either. The kitchen gets a new fridge (80 litres) that’s been designed exclusively for Malibu, while heating comes from Truma’s powerful Combi 6. The rear under-bed storage area has an optional removable floor, so equipment can be stored on two levels. A set of branded folding camping chairs and an outside table can be accommodated here.

Malibu has also introduced an acrylic screen to cover the control panel on all Charming models. There’s a new overhead kitchen cabinet with chrome piping and an extra open shelf for keys, etc. It’s a crowded market for fixed bed van conversions but the latest Malibu has enough differences to be worth a close look.
