The Lunar Delta FB is a new, unique family layout model that sets a standard all of its own – it’s the lightest caravan for its length built in Britain in 2011. And its kit includes Alde heating, ATC and an on-board water tank

Full review

Lunar brings family caravanning right to the top of the luxury tree with its new five-berth Delta FB. The FB stands for fixed bunks; there are two, on the offside, in their own well-defined area, and with head room, width and length of adult proportions.
Just forward of the bunks is a dining area with enough seating width for four adults. This area makes into a single bed, using the table as the base – but the bed is only 1.65m long, which isn’t suitable for adults. The lounge settees make adult-length singles, as alternative to the double there… It became very clear very quickly during our test day that ample flexibility and comfort for all at night is a star feature of this new layout.
Another obvious plus-point about the FB as a caravan for family needs is the size of its kitchen. A surface that’s 64cm wide and 64cm deep to the left of the sink ensures plates and bowls will never jostle for space. And three separate lower cupboards, plus a 175-litre fridge give you a near-domestic quantity of food storage space. The three upper cabinets give you recesses and clips for bottles and glasses, plus a large open cabinet. In line with current fashion, three of the five top doors have frosted glass insets; that saves weigh, of course – but it also looks great.
Before we’d been bowled over by the FB’s sleeping and cooking arrangements, though, we’d put it through its tow paces. A 20-mile motorway and narrow lanes journey to Little Orchard Caravan Park had reminded us of the inherent stability of four wheels – and, with the ATC stability control system on board, there’s an extra safety margin.
So far, the FB’s an impressive holiday home. And that’s before we’ve even opened the door to the full-width shower room…
Deltas are heated by the Alde system – and there’s a domestic-style radiator in the shower room to dry your towels swiftly. Importantly, there is a towel rail directly above the radiator, plus a towel loop to the right of the washbasin. And a rail runs the full length of the shower compartment, at roof height, providing space for two more towels.
Storage is a key topic when you’re choosing a family caravan – and the FB excels.
The wardrobe, in particular, stands out for its size: at 60cm, it’s wider than most. And it incorporates four drawers. That still gives you full hanging depth above them. The space alongside the drawers is clearly the best place for shoes. But realistically you’d be lucky to get three pairs in here. A shelf across this area to give another surface for shoes would have transformed this area and would have made the best use of the space. As it is, we’d suggest you’d be putting shoes in the locker under the lower bunk… There’s usually a solution.

Our verdict

The Lunar Delta FB is a fiver under £23,000. That’s a lot of money to spend on a caravan – or anything else. But set that against what you get here for that figure – a high level of equipment including Alde and ATC, a big caravan, a unique layout that we think is superbly practical for five – and you begin to see that there is real value in the new Delta FB. With an MTPLM of only 1725kg, it’s the lightest caravan of its length and spec around. And that’s some achievement.
