Campervan Layouts

MMM editorial

The Verdict

Campervans offer a variety of different layouts on a wide range of base vehicles. By definition they are small so there will be compromises, often in the kitchen area and with the lack of a WC. Some will only offer a PortaPotti, which will not suit everyone. However, campervans are perfect for families who just want (or who can just afford) one vehicle as they are easy to drive, can fit in most parking spaces, are more fuel efficent and can carry five in safety.

At a glance

The pros and cons of a campervan layout are:

  • Practical enough to be used as a sole vehicle
  • Often has five travel seats with full seatbelts
  • Easy to park and store
  • Very tight on space and storage
  • Limited kitchen and washroom facilities
  • Not always suitable for year-round use

Full details

Many of you will be familiar with the traditional Volkswagen campervan layout - swiveling cab seats, a forward-facing rear bench seat, a compact kitchen running along one side and, at the rear, a few cupboards

But it's not just VW that has mastered the art of campervan conversions – there are now hundreds of converters in the UK who build on a variety of base vehicles, all of which differ in size and provide a variety of potential layouts.

Bigger campervans will almost always have an end kitchen, with the lounge/sleeping area up front, utilising swiveling cab seats to make for a decent living area.

If there's a space for a washroom, it's likely to be at the rear opposite the kitchen, but there may only be a chemical 'PortaPotti' toilet stashed away in a low-level cupboard.

In a small van, the only way to go is up and converters do this in the form of a canvas-sided rising roof. This is kept down on the move, fitting into garages and below height restrictions but, once pitched, it is raised in order to create standing room on-site. Some converters, such as Volkswagen with its VW California, will also offer an extra bed in this rising area.

Campervans are an ideal way to test the water and see if this lifestyle suits. Lots of secondhand models can be found for sale on
this site and temptingly, they hold their values well so, if you buy and then decide it's not for you, you can recoup most if not all of your initial outlay.

Equally as tempting for many buyers is the fact that campervans are very practical. Not only can you go away with the chidren for a weekend of fun by the sea in your campervan but you can equally use it to drop them to school and drive on to work during the week.
