Weather warning for holiday caravanners

The recent storms and dire conditions generally mean that the news has been full of weather warnings over past weeks. There have been several reports of parks being flooded.

But even if your holiday park is well out of reach of flood waters and your holiday home properly secured with ground anchors, there are still dangers.

I discovered as much last week when visiting the park on the East Sussex coast on which our own holiday caravan is sited (writes Philip Pond).

Our BK Bluebird Grosvenor 35x12 was, mercifully unscathed. I had been confident that it wouldn’t be flooded. It’s safely up on a clifftop so flooding there could only take place if the most of the country was completely under water.

However, although ours were still intact, several neighbouring caravans had lost their skylights or sections of guttering. More worrying was an earth slip at the foot of our terraced park (well away from our plot, I’m relieved to say) which had exposed the underside of the concrete slabs on which half a dozen caravans were sited. Only the front section, admittedly, but worrying, nonetheless.

A neighbouring park had come off far worse. One holiday home there had been caught by a gust of wind which snapped the anchor chains and flipped it over.

Just to be on the safe side, it might be prudent to visit your own park sooner rather than later (even if it has closed for the winter) just to check that everything is secure and in order. Let your park owner know that you are coming.
