Riot of colour wins caravan park top award

Green-fingered staff at Tree Tops Caravan Park in Gwespyr, Flintshire, have made a colourful splash in the 2014 Wales in Bloom awards.

The family-run business beat hundreds of other eligible parks throughout Wales to take the number one spot in the larger parks category of the annual contest.

The accolade marks Tree Tops' 22nd year of scooping the main parks prize in the awards.

This 15-acre park features many visually stunning garden areas where, every year, the Tree Tops gardening team set out over 15,000 bedding plants. Most are grown from cuttings, plugs and seeds in the park's unheated greenhouses and are irrigated with the help of harvested rainfall.

The gardening gurus also maintain the park's many trees, shrubs and perennials, including a number of exotic species such as the glorious deep blue Agapanthus seen on the island of Madeira.

Although Tree Tops may look a riot of colour, the conservation-minded Walker family, owners of the park, have ensured that its displays are created with green principles in mind.

Many of the flowers have been chosen for their high nectar qualities, providing a valuable food source for insects such as the many butterfly varieties and bees attracted to the blooms.

World-famous botanist David Bellamy has presented the park with his prestigious annual conservation award at the top gold level for the past 13 years.
