Family scoop gold for their green caravan holidays

A family-run caravan holiday park in Kessingland near Lowestoft in Suffolk has winged its way to a major environmental award - with the help of butterflies, owls and dragonflies.

Heathland Beach Holiday Park has been named as a winner of the prestigious David Bellamy Conservation Award at its top gold level.

Professor Bellamy said that the Reader family fully deserved his accolade after creating an eco-friendly business which rolled out the red carpet for guests and the green carpet for wildlife.

The park was started 40 years ago by husband and wife team Bernard and May Reader and is still managed by the couple with help from their son Richard.

A raft of different environment-friendly measures contributed to Heathland Beach receiving its award.

Over the years, the park owners have planted hundreds of indigenous trees and shrubs to create valuable habitats and feeding resources for wildlife including many types of rare birds. Ancient hedgerows on the 30-acre park have also been carefully maintained with wildlife in mind, and well-used owl and bat boxes are also positioned throughout the grounds.

David Bellamy also highlighted the butterfly garden at Heathland Beach where high nectar-bearing blooms attract a wide variety of common and less familiar butterfly species. Drawing praise too is the well-managed lake on the park which acts as a magnet for many aquatic species, including water fowl and drangonflies.
