How can a kitchen, dining room and lounge integrate with one another and yet be totally separate? It sounds impossible – but it isn’t. This is the Forest Grove, the latest holiday home from Willerby, and its design is amazing.

The Forest Grove is one of only a few holiday lodges that has a ‘snug’ – a small room secluded away from the main living area; a retreat for reading, listening to music, or doing some work, perhaps. This neat little room is one clue to the Forest Grove’s distinctive character; its position, adjacent to (but very separate from) the lounge, is key to the separate-but-integrated elements of the dining, kitchen and lounging areas.

It works like this: part-walls divide the snug from the kitchen and a half-height wall forms the demarcation between the kitchen and the lounge. So it feels as if there are three rooms here, yet each feels like an entity in itself. This lodge has lots of unusual features, including a window seat in the dining area.

The window seat is just behind the four person dining table. The base of the seat is constructed with four vertical dividers, creating the ideal place for large books, or any other items that need to find a convenient place out of the way.

I perch on the window seat to write these words and run a hand over the tactile wallpaper of the feature wall alongside the dining area. It has a diagonal design of fawns, cream and a muted peach shade; it shimmers in the light.

The kitchen is almost square, its boundaries defined by the breakfast bar and the waist-height wall that divides it from the lounge.

Lots of cabinets and drawers make this a kitchen that will be easy to keep tidy. Appliances include an induction hob, oven and microwave. A dishwasher is an option.

From my window seat I’m taking an overview of the lounge with its flame-effect fire surrounded by a frame of back-lighting which changes through the spectrum from neon blue to soft orange.

The window in the far corner of the lounge is angled and gives the room an interesting dimension. French doors lead out onto your decking.

A deep pile luxurious rug is here; it’s part of the range of options which also includes underfloor heating in the bathroom and shower room.

The Forest Grove's snug

The snug is a fantastic little room. I sit for a few moments on the small armchair and envisage spending time here enjoying a fabulous view through the huge window. A Velux roof light is installed in the unit that we are reviewing; it’s another of the options and it gives this room a suggestion of a conservatory feel.

Another of the Forest Grove’s unusual features is here: a window that is actually framed by a dresser which gives you cabinets and a multitude of shelves around it. And if you want more seclusion than the part-wall provides, a door for the snug is an option.

The Forest Grove's utility room

The Forest Grove has a combined entrance hall and utility room.

It’s where to take off shoes, hang coats, towel-dry the dog after a rainy walk, perhaps. A washing machine is integrated into the cabinet run. 

The Forest Grove's bedrooms

A king-size bed and plenty of space are the features of the master bedroom that impressed me first. Then I found my way to the adjoining dressing room. The complexity of clothing accommodation is well-designed, with both full-height and jacket-length hanging space, plus drawers – and there’s even a dedicated space for an ironing board!

The en suite’s shower is large and there’s the option to have the luxury of underfloor heating in this room.

In the spacious second bedroom you can opt for a king size bed or two three-foot-wide singles.

A desk-style dressing table is in an alcove by the entrance to the bedroom, secluded away from the main room area.

The list of options for this lodge is generous and includes Velux windows in the kitchen as well as the snug, a ceramic hob, laminate flooring instead of vinyl and carpet in the lounge and snug, televisions… That’s in addition to the luxury of underfloor heating in the shower rooms; the Forest Grove is the first Willerby home to offer that option.

The Forest Grove is available in three layout-size options. There is both a two-bedroom and three-bedroom layout in the 40ft x 20ft size; in addition, there will be a 42ft x 20ft version with a centre lounge and two bedrooms, one at each end of the lodge. And it comes hot-tub ready!
