Welsh holiday park receives award for new flood defences

Static caravan, lodge and park home insurance specialist, Leisuredays, has presented Welsh holiday park, Spring Gardens Holiday Park with an award for its work to reduce flooding

The annual Risk Management Award recognises UK holiday parks which go above and beyond to protect their customers against insurance risks such as storm, flood, fire and theft by implementing relevant risk-management measures.

Previous flood damage

Spring Gardens Holiday Park, in St Asaph, Denbighshire, was one of a number of UK holiday parks hit by torrential rain from Storm Ciara in February 2020. The riverside park was flooded after the River Elwy came over the banking, causing three feet of floodwater at the park’s lowest point.

A number of holiday homes were damaged and some written off by the flood water, as well as sheds, their contents, and decking – with damage running into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The Leisuredays team worked closely with Spring Gardens to make sure damaged units were quickly cleared away – its insurance cover includes debris removal at no extra cost to the customer or the park, helping to remove unsightly damage quickly.

What has been done to reduce future flooding

Leisuredays’ flood consultants looked at ways of mitigating future flood risks and work started to raise replacement holiday homes and lodges above the flood levels. Leisuredays has been impressed by the park owner’s investment and hard work to protect the park and its customers from future damage. Because of the flood defence work, Leisuredays has been able to continue to provide flood insurance cover to the park’s customers. The raised bases are now well above the peak river levels experienced in flooding during 2020.
