Lodges take over from caravans in holiday popularity stakes

Luxury lodges are now at the forefront of new holiday home developments being rolled out by Park Holidays UK at more than half of its 25 southern England parks.

The company says that it has no intention of marginalising holiday caravans in the future, but those developments underline the fast-rising popularity of lodges as leisure homes.

Demand for them has driven the group’s policy of extending the holiday season on its parks, some of which are now open for over 11 months of the year.

The high standards of insulation and heating in lodges mean that owners can take holidays throughout all four seasons in comfort, irrespective of the weather.

In addition, the size of lodges – up to 40 per cent greater than most caravan holiday homes – means that families enjoy a domestic environment more closely akin to their permanent home.

This year alone, Park Holidays UK has plans for new holiday-home developments on 15 of its coastal parks in Devon, Kent, Sussex and Suffolk.

The majority of these will comprise two and three-bedroom lodges starting in price at around £79,000.

Another trend is that outside decking and verandas are often now regarded by buyers as “must have” complements to the lodge lifestyle.
