Walking, eating with friends, exploring the culture. Buying a holiday home is the key to a whole new leisure lifestyle – and It all adds up to quality time in your favourite place

Words: Louisa Perry

1. Your favourite place

Owning a holiday home means you can return to your favourite fantastic location again and again, which means you can make friends and get to know your neighbours. Why not share a drink on your decking, or fire up the barbecue with those staying near you?

2. Culture

Edmunton Church, Rutland

Soak up the culture of your new area. Many parks are near vibrant towns and cities. Why not take in a show at the theatre, go to see live music or a comedian, or explore local museums and historic sites such as castles or monuments.

3. Entertainment

On-site entertainment is available at some sites, so you can spend your evening in the open air enjoying live music or guest entertainers. Some parks offer children’s activities, too.

4. Beaches

Holkham Beach

Beach holidays without having to go abroad! Enjoy Britain’s beautiful beaches for a paddle in the sea during the warmer months, or a bracing winter walk in the fresh sea air (not forgetting the all-important fish and chips to warm you up).

5. Walking

If fell-walking is your thing, then many sites in areas such as the Lake District, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales will be an ideal location for your holiday home, affording endless opportunities to strap on your walking boots, grab your poles and go exploring.

6. Get fit!

Gyms on site at holiday home parks

Away from the pressures of work and personal commitments. Take advantage of the opportunity to do some exercise; walking and jogging are free, or you can take your bicycle; some sites also offer cycle hire, and picturesque cycle routes so that you can take in all that nature has to offer while getting some exercise.

Many local leisure centres and gyms offer one-off fitness classes and the opportunity to swim without having to join as a member. Many sites, such as Kelling Heath, on the North Norfolk coast, have on-site health and fitness clubs.

7. Quality time

Quality time with your family

Quality time with your children – many parks offer children's playgrounds or swimming pools, or just relax the routine and let your kids take the lead in what you get up to one day!

You might find yourself splashing in the pool, playing football or boules, or running around with a Frisbee; with all the Great Outdoors has to offer and no demanding schedule, you can spend your leisure time making memories with those special little people.

8. Invite your friends

Invite your friends to your holiday home

Encourage the family to stay. With ample living and sleeping space, show off your holiday home to family and friends by inviting them for a visit or overnight.

Stylish and comfortable, most kitchen and living areas are open plan, ideal for entertaining, so why not put some music on, rustle up some great food and drinks, and enjoy some time catching up with family and friends.

9. New skills

Away from the distractions and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, now's your opportunity to learn a new skill, perhaps something you've wanted to do for years.

Most parks offer WiFi, so why not find yourself a YouTube tutorial on something you’ve always been interested in and learn a new language, perhaps, work towards a new professional qualification, or get creative with crafts or photography, making jewellery, woodwork, cake decoration; the list is endless!

10. Enjoy!

Family cycling

Make the most of your weekend and holiday time to indulge your passions and make time for those things that you enjoy that you never seem to get round to at home: art, wine tasting, crafts, writing, cooking, baking, sewing, music, gaming. Go on. You're on your holidays!
