Editor's Pick: Holiday Park Profile - Hawthorn Farm

On the doorstep of Dover – and therefore ideal as a springboard for day trips to France – Hawthorn Farm is a splendidly convenient location.

It’s also nice to contemplate buying a holiday home in rural Kent if you are a week-time city dweller; a place of escape to the country and coast holds huge appeal. Enjoy the advantages of wide-open spaces and very fresh air. Both of those things are guaranteed at Hawthorn Farm, which is just under five miles from Dover.

The park is set in woodland and open areas. Holiday homes nestle among trees, shrubs and flower beds; Hawthorn Farm has been landscaped to create a charming park with natural appeal.

We first visited this park with our touring caravan and, within minutes of our arrival, we were setting off on a saunter of exploration among the park’s 28 acres; a delightful place, we instantly decided. We weren’t there as a pre-Channel crossing stopover; we were there to explore the southern sector of Kent.

The nearest beach is at St Margaret’s Bay, it’s a sheltered shingle beach, sitting under the spectacular white cliffs. Walking routes take in this bay; they’re part of the England Coastal Path and the Saxon Shore Way, a 160-mile route.

Historical fascination lines up like a text book travel guide; plenty to keep you occupied through many, many visits to your holiday home. The enormous fortification that is Dover Castle, South Foreland Lighthouse, from where Marconi received the first ever ship-to-shore message, in 1898... There are gardens to explore, and the Roman Painted House, discovered in the 1970s, housing extensive Roman frescoes…

That’s just in the area close to the park; there’s a lot more of Kent to explore. The county has 10 famous castles and Kent County Council lists 20 more, of various types; a historian’s paradise, then! Plus, there are at least 20 gardens to visit; Kent, after all, is known as the Garden of England.
