Lea Park, Lincolnshire

LEA Park lies close to the River Witham and less than fifteen minutes’ walk from the historic and bustling town centre of Boston.

Nestling between the Fens and the Wash, Boston was once one of the country’s major ports, and also gave its name to the US city of Massachusetts, five of whose state Governors were descendants of Lincolnshire Bostonians. It was in Boston, too, that the original Pilgrim Fathers attempted a first escape from religious persecution, aiming to seek refuge in Holland at a time when emigration without state permission was illegal.

Lea Park has 33 homes sited and is licensed for forty-one homes, laid out along two parallel and newly resurfaced roads, and around the large square at the far end. The homes themselves vary in age, reflecting the park’s 40-year history.

The park is owned and run by the Derbicz family, who are Lincolnshire born and bred. Ray Lealand, a local farmer and fruit importer, bought the land for Lea Park, and the house that stood on it, back in 1964. He obtained planning permission for a residential park, began installing caravan homes and sold tourers from the site, as well as renting flats in the old house. The house was eventually demolished, and some bungalows built in its stead. These are now rented out, with similar restrictions to those applying on the park – over 50s with no dependant children.

Ray’s daughter Anne Derbicz started helping him in the late 1980s, and took over with her husband Christopher in 1995. Their children Rachel and Steven are now involved in running Lea Park and also their second park, Hall Hills. This is three miles from Boston town centre and is classed as a country park.

Running beside the River Witham this park is ideal for those that enjoy walking and cycling.

Today, Lea Park is pristine, its tidiness matching the homeowners’ well-kept gardens, and though it is in a residential area, nothing much disturbs the peaceful atmosphere.
From some of the gardens, the imposing tower of the ‘Boston Stump’ can be seen rising above the roofs of the town.
