Full review

Volkspec is a Sheffield-based converter that prides itself on being able to create one-off and bespoke conversions on any vehicle you like – even Land Rovers.

The company can supply new and approved used base vehicles, and Volkswagen and Nissan models are a particularly popular choice of base vehicle.

It aims to provide a professional yet affordable service, taking on anything from something as small as replacing a fuse to a full conversion of any van.

You’ll find a selection of fully converted ready-to-go campervans for sale on its website, as well as a range of examples of some of its bespoke conversions.

If you opt to have a campervan built to order, besides a wide choice of base vehicles and layouts, Volkspec offers over 100 design options, meaning there’s an extensive range of furniture and upholstery to choose from, as well as equipment from popular brands like Reimo, RIB, Webasto, Eberspächer, Vohringer and Dometic.

The campervan featured here is an example of its Delphi conversion. Based on a long-wheelbase Volkswagen T6 in Highline spec, it has a rear kitchen layout with a separate loo cubicle opposite. Ahead of this section, there are two RIB Neptune travel seats and both cab seats swivel to create a comfy dining space for four around a central table. Come bedtime, the seats convert into two single beds.

This particular build was a customer order for owners, Carl and Ann, who said: “We first heard about Volkspec through a work colleague who lives near the workshop, so we went down with a layout in mind to have a chat. We could see the quality of workmanship on the vans that they were working on so, after receiving a quote, we chose the colour scheme and the build began. We were kept informed while the build was ongoing and could visit any time we wanted – nothing was too much trouble.”

Volkspec uses Vohringer lightweight plywood on its cabinets and either solid wood or composite materials for its selection of worktops.

Carl and Ann also got to pick from a full range of colour and finish options for the interior, including lining and flooring.

With many options available for the conversion itself, they selected a Reimo front-hinged elevating roof, Dometic fridge/freezer, Dometic combined oven and grill, Panasonic microwave, Dometic two-burner gas hob and combined sink unit fed by an inboard Reimo 27-litre fresh water tank, and a Planar 2D night heater with a seven-day timer.

They also opted for a Dometic loo (fixed or removable options are available) and a Fiamma F45S wind-out awning.

Additionally, the conversion features fully glazed side opening windows, sound and thermal insulation, a CBE 12V/230V power management system with built-in battery charging and a 12V leisure battery with a split charging system.

There is LED lighting throughout as well as 12V, 230V and USB sockets.

The Volkspec Leisure lowdown

Established in 2017, Volkspec Leisure is a small family-run business. Company Director, Josh Andrews, comes from a background in marine engineering and boat building and had worked in the leisure industry since leaving marine college before landing a job with a local campervan conversion company.

He enjoyed working on campervans so much that he decided to start his own business and teamed up with Paul Ashley (Production Director), who is a time-served engineer, having spent most of his life turning, milling and machining various components for all sorts of jobs, including the Channel Tunnel boring machine. The pair enjoy a challenge and pride themselves on being able to convert all types of vehicle.

As the company is building up a reputation through word of mouth, Volkspec Leisure is going from strength to strength. Josh and Paul aim to provide high-quality products and a professional service to customers nationwide.

Josh says, “We understand our customers’ needs and aspire to become one of the nation’s leaders in the campervan conversion industry by developing a good reputation for excellent customer service and by providing enhanced services.

We grow through creativity, invention and innovation and we integrate honesty and integrity into all aspects of our business. In this way, we hope to become a key player in the industry”.
