Full review

French manufacturer, Groupe Pilote, owns a number of names you’ll have heard of over here, like Frankia and Le Voyageur, as well as brands not represented in the UK, such as Hanroad. And, in case you’ve ever wondered why campervans built just a mere hop across the Channel don’t always make it to our soil, it’s partly because we drive on the other side of the road, and also as a result of our rainy climate.

Therefore, anything built specifically for the UK market will have the steering wheel on the correct side, and is often designed to offer maximum comfort inside when it’s dreary outside.

The Pilote V630LG is billed as an ‘Exclusive British Van’ and straightaway you’ll spot the large and spacious rear lounge that’s all the rage over here these days. It’s easy to see why, too, as this layout is ideal for two people to sprawl on a sofa apiece, or entertain friends and family in the evening or when it’s raining outside.

Of course, in sunny weather, you can throw open those barn doors to let the breeze through and take in the views over breakfast, too. At night, the side sofas convert to a king-size bed.

Another thing that’s deemed idiosyncratically British is our love of a well-appointed kitchen. On the Continent, kitchen set-ups are often quite basic because campers tend to prefer to cook outside.

That’s possible over here as well, of course, if you only camp in summer but, for those seeking year-round use out of their campervan, you’ll no doubt be grateful for the oven and grill here, plus a three-burner hob and adjacent stainless-steel sink under glass lids, and an 85-litre fridge/freezer.

The model featured here is also a Special Edition version, which means it comes with a whole host of extras that add further appeal for the all-weather camper, such as Truma Combi 6 D (diesel-fired) boiler and heating, and an 80-litre insulated waste water tank.

The Special Edition also benefits from plenty of other cool features you won’t want to pass up, like a 120W extra-thin solar panel, a second AGM leisure battery, a black two-bike cycle carrier and an awning.

On the base vehicle (Fiat Ducato 140bhp), The Special Edition benifits from 16in alloys, a reversing camera, aluminium-effect dashboard, leather steering wheel and gear knob, steering wheel controls and an eight-inch DAB+ Bluetooth radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Opposite the kitchen, you’ll find the washroom, which is pretty well-appointed, too. There’s a shower cubicle to one side, and the Special Edition also gets a slatted floor. On the other side, there’s a Thetford toilet, while a washbasin with mixer tap is positioned centrally with storage space above and below. There’s LED lighting throughout and ventilation is courtesy of two rooflights with flyscreens.

Storage space throughout this campervan is good, with plenty of overhead lockers as well as a wardrobe next to the washroom, and space beneath the sofas. Other features include an electrically operated entrance step, swivelling cab seats, a number of sockets and USB ports, pre-wiring for a satellite antenna and cruise control.

The Pilote lowdown

Pilote has been represented in the UK longer than any other continental motorhome brand, with Hayes Leisure (still a Pilote dealer) originally acting as the French firm’s importer as long ago as the mid 1980s, but the brand goes back further than that, to a caravan in 1962 and its first motorhome in 1978. Today, Pilote offers a full range of panel van conversions to suit all tastes, besides its myriad motorhomes.

The French brand is well represented around the UK, from Dicksons of Perth in Scotland down to Wilmoths in the far south (with branches in Guildford and Southampton). In Northern Ireland, Pilote has a dealer, too – Camper NI (in Hillsborough). In Wales, there’s Clwyd Caravans and Tenby Tourers.

Then, there’s Signature Motorhomes in the northwest, SMC (Newark) and Hayes Leisure (Birmingham) in the Midlands, Pullingers in East Anglia and Davan Caravans in the southwest, as well as AMC Motorhomes in East Sussex.
