The latest range within Hymer’s best-selling B-Class portfolio – called the ModernComfort – currently consists of just four models: two A-classes and two identical layouts in low-profiles. These models were developed in partnership with Mercedes and are built on its latest Sprinter, coupled to Hymer’s own lightweight SLC chassis.
All are available on a standard 3,500kg chassis, giving well in excess of 500kg payload, although there is an option to upgrade to a 4.5-tonne gross weight. As standard, they come with Mercedes’ 143bhp turbo-diesel engine but this can be upgraded to 177bhp and also coupled to Mercedes’ latest automatic gearbox.
Uniquely, the ModernComfort (B-MC) range is built on the front-wheel drive version of the Sprinter, giving access to the new nine-speed automatic, which is not available on rear-wheel drive chassis. Also here are the latest Mercedes factory-fitted features, including new swivel captain’s chairs, electric folding mirrors, a wider rear axle, motorhome-specific tyres and a new ‘hibernation mode’, which allows all systems to shut down fully to retain battery power while the vehicle is being stored unused for extended periods. These were all developed to make the Sprinter more suitable for motorhome conversion.
The low-profile B-MC 580 features a completely redesigned interior and new furniture. But, while the design is new, the layout is nothing revolutionary, with twin rear single beds, a central washroom and kitchen and a front half-dinette lounge. The layout sits on a GRP lightweight double-floor, which, as well as accommodating all the tanks (180-litre fresh water and 150-litre waste), plumbing and the heating system and wiring, offers a double-access storage compartment that is 36cm high throughout. The interior has a deliberately clean, automotive look.
The bedroom has twin single beds that measure 1.95m by 0.86m as standard, with the option to have a 2.20m bed fitted. You can also have a child’s bed made up in the front lounge. Beds should be comfortable with multi-zone cold foam mattresses.
The kitchen has a 142-litre fridge/freezer alongside the galley, which is typical of its type with a three-burner hob and small rectangular basin. There is also a flip-up worktop and three very large soft-close drawers. It is expected that UK models will have an oven, too.
Opposite the galley is Hymer’s new ‘Comfort’ washroom with large shower (featuring 1.94m headroom) and bench toilet. At the front is the lounge, which has seating upholstered in a special water-repellent fabric. Thanks to a recess in the wall of the washroom, a TV up to 32in can be incorporated.
Outside, meanwhile, there are twin doors to a huge garage that has a capacity of 350kg. Garage shelving, an external shower, fastening hooks and metal flooring are all available. But the proof of this particular pudding will be driving the new Sprinter. For that we can’t wait…
