Full review

This Summit 600 is an established model in the Globecar H-Line range but new for the 2020 season is the 600 Plus. Following on from the well-received Globescout Plus (see June issue), this new Summit model adopts the same philosophy – a Peugeot, rather than Fiat, base vehicle, a high standard spec and a keen price. So, this six-metre fixed bed van conversion comes to the UK with an on-the-road price of just £42,995.

Included in that figure, the long-wheelbase Peugeot Boxer base vehicle comes with a 3,500kg maximum gross weight (for an especially generous payload) and the 160bhp power unit (for plenty of grunt). Not only that, but as standard it features cruise control, ESP, Traction Plus, LED daytime running lights, alloy wheels and metallic paint. There’s a choice of six exterior colours.

Inside, on the face of it, this is another 5.99m-long van conversion with the ‘Euro classic’ transverse rear double bed layout which has long been a best seller on the Continent. Before you even look at the detail, though, you’ll see that the Summit 600 Plus has key differences from its many, many rivals.

For a start, the forward end of the galley curves smoothly round towards the sliding door, creating a more open feeling up front. This spaciousness is emphasised to the rear by the lack of any tall or full-height furniture along the offside, thus giving a clear view through to the rear bedroom and beyond to the back doors.

Being an H-Line model, the Summit is built by Reisemobilbau Heinrich (D-Lines are manufactured at the Dethleffs plant) and it has a totally different décor to its sister campervans. Furniture comes in Rosewood or (for a £295 supplement) the Oak White finish seen here. Other extra-cost items that buyers might consider are an upgrade to gas/electric heating (a gas-only Truma Combi 4 is standard) at £595 and the third berth (a transverse single in the front lounge) for £295.

The seating area, of course, has the usual swivel cab seats and a half-dinette with two three-point seatbelts. Automotive-style headrests are fitted, along with a wall-mounted table with swing-out extension leaf (for the occupant of the driver’s seat). A Roman blind is fitted at the lounge window and, enhancing the exterior appearance, all glazing is of the framed type.

The unusually shaped galley includes a combination stainless-steel hob and sink and an 80-litre compressor fridge, as well as three large drawers. There’s a useful amount of preparation space without having to deploy folding panels and the adjacent door has a flyscreen to keep out unwanted flying visitors. An oven is offered as a dealer-fit accessory at £695.

Opposite is one of the Summit 600’s most appealing features – one that you’ll not see in the D-Line range. The washroom is a good size and well-appointed, including the superior Dometic toilet, but its star feature is a swing-wall arrangement to create a shower cubicle that doesn’t require a curtain – or leave the toilet and basin soaking wet.

Across the rear is a transverse double bed which is claimed to be 1.96m by 1.60m, narrowing to 1.47m on the nearside (said to be the largest in its class). Underneath is a large boot area (1.05m wide) with a removable front panel for carrying longer loads and stackable bed sections to allow bikes on board. Globecar eschews a folding bed design to allow a thicker mattress to be fitted.

Finally, there’s a concealed wardrobe under the front offside corner of the bed. Here, twin hanging rails pop up hydraulically – very neat!

Our verdict

A six-metre campervan with a fixed bed for a starting price of a little over £40k is worthy of closer inspection. All in all, this is a spacious, well designed van conversion with an appealing washroom.
