Full review

Generosity looms large in this motorhome. It's big in both size and the value it aims to provide.

With more kit fitted as standard and a current £1,700 knocked off the recommended on-the-road figure, this 'dealer special' 'van was commissioned by Marquis Motorhomes to add value to the standard Elddis Autoquest 175.

Better by design?

Standing at over seven metres long the 175 isn't exactly small, but at 2.20m it's quite a bit narrower than the 'standard' coachbuilt.

Height is important too. This motorcaravan may be described as low-profile, but only at the cost of an over cab bed. In reality though it's only a few millimetres shorter than it's overcab bed-equipped siblings, thanks in part to the fact the 175 rides on the taller Peugeot Boxer chassis.

Inside the layout provides living accomodation for just two people. Crucially there are no rear belted seats, so there's no option of bringing kids along and making them sleep in a tent.

The best description of the interior is 'big', and this includes all of it. Long-sofas in the lounge give way to a large mid 'van kitchen, whilst the washroom and wardrobe occupy the full vehicle-width at the rear.

Heating is provuded by Whale's duo of hot water and space heater - both run on gas and mains electricity. The boiler provides a generous 13 litres of hot water with warm-up time quoted at around 20 minutes.

Living areas and exterior

External sysling is inoffensive, if a little old fashioned. Overcab moulding is simple, as well as the rear panel, adorned with plain round lights and an LED strip stop-lamp.

An awning is a standard-fit value adding item, as is the electric step which retracts automatically on engine start-up.

The interior is bright and airy, with light-coloured wood tones relieved in places by white panels and chromed trim.

The upholstery presents as very good quality, and the neutral tones add to give an even greater sense of space in the interior.

The Kitchen

The galley provides almost all the favilities of the very best motorhome kitchens, whatever the price.

The chef gets a full range of cooking equipment; hob, grill, oven and microwave are all present and of a good standard.

The Thetford hob includes four heating elements, gas burners, and one mains operated solid hotplate that makes the best use of the site hook-up you've paid for.

The only real problem with the equipment is the amount of it. You'll have to be careful with everything on not to exceed your 16-amp capability, leading to a trip.

The stainless steel sink comes with a plastic washing-up bowl and removable draining board, and is of a good enough size.

The Washroom

This washroom is one of the most spacious we've ever seen at MMM. The wardrobe is in here too, so it creates a great changing/dressing area.

The wardrobe is a two-door affair with only hanging area. It is floor to ceiling though and only impeded by the gas bottle storage area, so plenty of room to hang.

The shower is so impressive you'd probably be happy to see the same installed in your home. It's semi-circular and fitted with rigid doors that come together magnetically. There's also excellent headroom (6ft 3½in) and the decent sized rooflight should be able to get rid of all the steam.

The washbasin is boat-shaped and is surrounded by yet more clever storage options, buth underneath and above.

There's plenty of space to use the toilet too, and it's a Thetford C250 so it's waste cassette is conveniently mounted on wheels.

Sleeping area

Sleeping choices come in the form of a pair of singles, or one double bed, both at a length of 6ft 3in.

The beds are easy to make up, sliding out on a pair of double frames to provide the base of a transverse double bed. Then simply fill in the middle with the backrests and you'll be left with a reasonably flat and quite firm bed.

Storage

In the form of storage for bedding, there isn't much. The obvious (and warmest) place would be in the overcab storage area, but it's not large enough.

Aside from this, storage is pretty good, with six large overhead lockers in the lounge - a couple of them shelved.

Under-sofa space on the offside is well served by an external hatch, while inside, both sofa bases feature full-sized drop-down fronts that are superb. They also have cargo nets within, so their contents don't spill out when you open them.

Our verdict

The Majestic 175 is a well-equipped entry level British coachbuilt. The lounge is comfortable and practical, providing plenty of space for entertaining, and with a choice of double or single beds it's also versatile. Negatives come in the form of a lack of bedding storage, a washroom cabinet that looms and a lack of space heating distribution.

Advantages

The price
Very well-equipped cab
Spacious interior
Large washing/changing room
Big shower
Cleverly designed under-seat stowage
Excellent kitchen spec
Choice of beds

Disadvantages

Unrefined Peugeot engine
Head-banging cupboard above washbasin
Lack of sufficient air-blown heating outlets
Only 2kW heater output
Rather large for manouvering
