Perhaps you have a people-carrier (MPV), off-roader (SUV) or van that you use all week and wondered about camping in at weekends? Perhaps you have a VW Caravelle or Transporter and thought about turning it into a campervan, but were put off by the cost? Maybe you just want to go camping with a bit more comfort than a tent? Well, the Ququq could be the answer to any of those questions.

It is a self-contained box that slides in the tailgate (or back door/doors) and, it is said, converts your car into a camper in less than a minute! Designed to be robust, and light enough to be loaded/unloaded by hand by two people, the Ququq is made from aluminium, waterproof multiplex and stainless steel.

The Kombibox version weighs about the same as four crates of drinks, while the larger models have a separate bed section to make removal and installation easier. Fold-away handles make the Ququq easy to handle while, at home, it’ll take up less than one square metre of space.

Each Ququq incorporates a bed that folds out by pulling a handle and comes with a 10cm-thick cold foam mattress. It comes in a single unit with the kitchen featuring a two-burner stove, 20 litres of water storage, a sink, worktop and storage area. All of the facilities can be accessed at the same time from the back of the vehicle, but with only the most limited weather protection from the raised tailgate above, you might need to think about an awning, too.

If you change your vehicle, you can move your Ququq unit to your new car. It’s here that the design of the unit really excels and you don’t have to buy a specific Campingbox for a particular vehicle – unless you’re looking at the bespoke models for the classic – and iconic – off-roaders: the D-box (£2,592) for the Land Rover Defender 110 or the G-box for the Mercedes G-Class or G-Wagen (also priced at £2,592). You don’t need to make any alterations to your car, or drill any holes, so using a Ququq will not damage your vehicle or reduce its resale value.

Beyond these special models, for vehicles that have a passionate following, there are two versions of Ququq: Kombibox (£2,370) and Busbox (£2,832). The Kombibox fits small van-derived cars like the Citroën Berlingo, Fiat Doblo, Ford Tourneo Connect, Mercedes Citan and VW Caddy. It measures 106cm by 42cm by 76cm and weighs 60kg. It has a bed that’s 1.95m by 1.10m and an option is a pull-out coolbox. The Busbox is for larger vehicles such as the Ford Transit Custom, Mercedes Vito, Peugeot Expert, Vauxhall Vivaro and VW T4, T5 and T6 Transporters.

It measures 115cm by 48cm by 76cm, while its wider (cold foam) mattress measures 1.95m by 1.34m. Weight of the unit is 50kg, plus 25kg for the bed. A telescopic pull-out section for a coolbox is optional.
