Full review

Previously, the more youthful, entry-level Free campervans from Hymer have all been Fiat-based. Now, for the first time, there’s a model on the latest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with front-wheel drive – the Free S 600. Along with the DuoCar, this is Hymer’s first van conversion on this relatively new base vehicle.

Like its sister models on the Ducato, the S 600 has a modern interior design with matt white surfaces and silver-grey details combined with oak wood tones. The layout is the European favourite of a half-dinette up front and a transverse double bed at the rear, where a new, pull-out step eases access and a side pod allows sufficient internal width for a full-sized bed. During the day, the bed frame and mattress can be folded up to create storage for surfboards, bikes and other items.

The kitchen area features a 90-litre compressor fridge, while, opposite, the bathroom includes a bench toilet and a shower with outdoor function. The 110-litre fresh water tank is generous for this class of vehicle and an electric waste water drain is a rare convenience.

The optional pop-top roof (for which an insulation kit is available) can turn the Free S 600 into a full four-berth. Ambient lighting extends throughout the living and sleeping areas, while windows are the upmarket, aluminium-framed type.

Thanks to its front-wheel drive, the Hymer boasts interior headroom of two metres. It is also equipped with numerous assistance systems, including Crosswind Assist, as well as start/stop. Further Mercedes-Benz assistance systems can be optionally added, such as Distronic adaptive cruise control, Active Blind Spot Assist and a parking package. The standard 143bhp engine can also be mated to a smooth nine-speed fully automatic transmission.

The Hymer Free S 600 will be available from dealers from spring 2020 onwards.
