You know those concept vehicles, stylish show models that never go into production? Well, here’s one such design that could soon be on your drive. First seen by the public at the Caravan Salon in 2017, the DuoCar arrived with dealers late 2019.

It has an unusual, pure two-berth, layout and compact, go-anywhere dimensions. But from the very beginning, the focus was on motorhome enthusiasts who voiced their opinions in an online survey, leading to the DuoCar’s design process.

Base, of course, is the latest front-wheel drive Mercedes Sprinter van with 143bhp engine. And, as befits a modern motor vehicle, safety is ensured by the numerous assistance systems, such as Crosswind and Active Brake Assist, plus Distronic Active Distance Assist. Keyless start and automatic headlights are further features rarely found in a campervan, while the exterior has all-round flush glazing and the usual service flaps are refreshingly absent for a cleaner look.

Inside, the new Hymer has a long side couch seating area, which can be quickly converted into a double bed measuring two metres in length. During the day, bedding stores beneath the sofa. An optional pop-top roof provides an alternative place to sleep.

Opposite the settee, the kitchen has a two-burner hob and a 70-litre compressor fridge. Open lines of sight in the living area also create a generous feeling of space. The washroom is located across the rear. Here, an innovative shower tray is recessed into the floor, while the toilet pulls out for use. The wardrobe is also located in the bathroom, so the area doubles as a dressing room.

The new DuoCar S comes with diesel-fired heating and the optional Hymer Smart Battery System, which combines the enhanced performance of lithium batteries with the lower cost of conventional lead batteries. The system stores energy in both batteries in parallel.
