Work from anywhere option increases leisure vehicle demand
The Swift Group has found that the increasing numbers of people working from home, or ‘hybrid’ working, is driving demand for caravans, motorhomes and holiday homes
Recent consumer trend research, commissioned by the motorhome, caravan and park home manufacturer, found that an increasing number of people are choosing to work from mobile workspaces, including campervans, motorhomes, caravans and holiday homes.
With remote working now the new normal, the Swift Group’s research revealed new work-life trends, including an increase in ‘workations’ (working while on holiday) and ‘bleisure’ (blending work and leisure), while others are simply becoming ‘digital nomads' and working from the comfort of their leisure vehicle.
It also looks like workers aren’t keen to return to the office full-time, with a YouGov poll revealing that fewer than one in ten people in the UK want life to return to the pre-pandemic normal, and 80% of millennials stated that they would change jobs to join a flexible employer that would allow them to work from anywhere.
This has fuelled a dramatic increase in demand for new and used models, as John Lally, Director General of the NCC (National Caravan Council), explains,
In the UK, caravans – of all types – are experiencing almost unprecedented demand. For example, at the end of 2021, sales of new touring caravans had grown by 23.5% (to 17,639 units), motorhomes and campervans by 12% (to 14,074 units) and holiday caravans by 38% (to 19,624 units) compared to 2020.
Data and anecdotal evidence from both dealers and parks is that this growth is being driven by new entrants to the market with a lower age profile who can use their new caravan to facilitate working from anywhere.
Swift Group’s Deputy Managing Director, Amy Archer, adds,
Lockdown gave many people the opportunity to experience a dramatically different way of life and a new work-life balance. As a result, people are finding new ways to work, including creating mobile office spaces in leisure vehicles that can function as both holiday vehicles and mobile workspaces with the comforts of WiFi, a washroom, cooking facilities and heating. The joys of remote working means work can be done where and when you choose it to be.
