Survey finds young people prefer campervans
A survey of 2000 adults aged 25-35, by comparethemarket.com, has found that thanks to the high cost of living, some 31% of them would consider living in a campervan. The survey posed the question that to save money on the cost of living, which of the following alternative accommodation options would the respondents consider. The choices ranged from sharing a room and even a bed, to living on a houseboat and in a campervan. While nearly 45% said they wouldn’t entertain any of the choices, the most popular answer for those who said they were prepared to rough it to some degree was for living in a campervan. Around half said they would only be willing to put up with the alternative accommodation for up to three months though.
Unsurprisingly, when broken down by region, the four most popular areas where people were willing to live in a campervan were the south west, Wales, Scotland and the north east.
Those most likely to take to the roads worked in information/technology or charity-based professions. In terms of percentages, the highest category was from the performing arts, but here the numbers replying were so small as to make the result statistically unreliable.
The aim of the survey by comparethemarket.com was to find out where the under-35s could save money compared to pay high rental prices and while living in community spaces in an old peanut factory came out cheapest, it was the campervan life that held the most appeal.
