Road safety charity urges motorists to check tyres
Road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, is urging motorists to carry out essential tyre checks following Britain’s extreme weather conditions
Following the Met Office’s first ever ‘red warning’ for extreme heat in England – with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees in some areas of the country last week – the road safety charity is warning motorists of the dangers of poorly maintained tyres, with issues such as bubbling, punctures and blowouts exacerbated by intense heat.
A recent survey carried out by IAM RoadSmart revealed that respondents admitted to checking their tyre pressure only once every 7.2 weeks and tyre treads once every 10.5 weeks, when both should be checked once a fortnight.
The charity found that regular vehicle coolant checks are also forgotten, with respondents saying that they check their coolant every 11.6 weeks, when this should also be checked once a fortnight or before a long journey, especially in hot weather.
Rebecca Ashton, Head of Policy and Research at IAM RoadSmart, says,
In the midst of a UK and European heatwave, it’s vital that we do all we can to protect our health and wellbeing. While things like limiting your sun exposure and staying hydrated are perhaps more obvious aspects to staying safe, an often-overlooked exercise is checking your car.
Worryingly, our research has revealed that motorists are not conducting tyre checks as often as they should be, and the soaring temperatures could bring the issues associated with this to the fore. We would urge motorists to ensure they make these routine tyre and vehicle checks more often in such extreme conditions.
