New Mercedes Sprinter announced

Mercedes-Benz has launched its all-new Sprinter van, which will be used by motorhome and campervan manufacturers as abase for their new models

Motorhomes and campervans based on the new Sprinter may also be able to benefit from greater payloads thanks to a new option on the new model.

Customers will now be able to order front-wheel drive models as well as rear-wheel drive. The new FWD option with give the base vans a greater payload (50kg more) and a 80mm lower floor, meaning easier access and more interior space. FWD will be available in two wheelbases and three heights.

With a low-frame chassis (Al-Ko or otherwise), the rear floor of coachbuilts based on the new Sprinter can be lowered by up to 200mm, negating the need for an entrance step at the habitation door.

Also, campervans and motorhomes will see two diesel engines: a 140bhp version and an exclusive to campers 174bhp engine that provides 400Nm of torque. You can also choose between the six-speed manual gearbox or the nine-speed automatic.

All Sprinters variants will adopt several new technologies including an electronic parking brake, which usefully in motorhomes, aids access between the cab and living areas. Other new features include infotainment systems that can be controlled by voice, ergonomic electrically adjustable seats, keyless start and improved air-con systems among other things.

It is expected that Sprinter-based motorhomes and campervans will be launched for the 2019 season onwards.
