What to do when parked on a site that floods

With reports of the wettest winter for 30 years on the way, caravan insurance specialist Towergate Insurance has some words of advice that equally as relevant for motorhomers parked up on sites. The basic advice comes as a checklist of essential tips including:

• Identify a place where you and your family can keep away from the floodwater.
• Gather essential items together such as warm cloths, blankets, necessary medications, torches, food supplies, valuables, mobile phone and/or radio.
• Never attempt to walk through any depth of floodwater – this can contain tree branches and other debris below the surface that poses a real danger.
• Wait for the emergency services and follow their instructions.
• Call Floodline on 0845 988 1188 for latest information, or listen to local radio.
• Call 999 if rising floodwater is placing you in danger.

The advantage that a motorhome has over a static caravan on the same park is that you can drive away, however this should only be done if there is a good visibility and a clear route to higher ground. If flooding occurs at night and the site is next to a river, it can be extremely dangerous to start driving around. In this case it is better to follow evacuation procedures at the site.

The Environment Agency has a website, updated every 15 minutes, with the latest flood warnings while the Met Office has both predictions and warnings of current conditions.
