Motorhome dealer on the move in Wales
South-Wales based caravan and motorhome dealer 3As Leisure has had plans to move from its site at Pensarn, Carmarthen to the Nantyci showground, further along the A40, approved by the local council, even though the council’s own planning department recommended refusing it. The family business submitted plans last summer to move its headquarters, from the Pensarn site, which the company said it had outgrown, to an 12-acre site at the showground on the outskirts of Carmarthen.
The planning department recommended turning the application down because it would not be in keeping with the area, even though town and county councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths had said, "It is an area which already has the showground site, mart and vets practice. It's already developed and it's not as if this is a new scheme on green land in the countryside. There will be additional jobs coming along with those being relocated from Pensarn, bringing in total 50 jobs."
The councillors duly voted to approve the application, going against the planning department, by pointing out that the site was suitable in relation to nearby businesses and also because of the economic benefits gained from having a local business create new jobs overall.
Aled Evans from 3As Leisure commented, “This is been long haul for us as we purchase the land over year ago subject to planning and we had the go ahead about two weeks now. As you know Carmarthen showground is big open field so it’s going to take us about another year or so by the time we put our buildings up. We put in for a 20 bay workshop offices/Showroom/Accessory shop/ Coffee shop/ and loads more. Also the sales area will be a just-under 10-acre site with more land to follow.”
