Lunar Automotive buys Lunar Caravans

After a tumultuous few weeks, Lunar Caravans can confirm it will be continuing to operate, thanks to a buyout. Newly formed Lunar Automotive was set up to acquire the business and assets of Lunar Caravans.

A spokesman for the company told us, “All orders are being fulfilled and as we, Lunar Automotive, have acquired the business and assets of ‘Old Lunar’, it is business as usual. We pride ourselves on our objectives of the three excellences - design, production and build quality and will continue to strive to achieve these at all times.”

The parent company is MEWA, with its origins in the South African stainless steel industry in the early 1900s and its pioneer Cecil Marks. While the new directors do not have experience in the caravan industry, a spokesman stated, “Lunar Automotive has acquired a very experienced caravan manufacturing team whose expertise was instrumental in the decision to invest in the business. The MEWA group has been involved in specialist engineering and component manufacture for 100 years and this experience and capability coupled with the manufacturing expertise acquired with the existing team at Lunar, bodes well for Lunar to not only celebrate its 50th anniversary but to look forward to the next 50 years.”

Production of caravans will begin again in September, with a whole line-up of new products to introduce to the public. Although the company’s initial focus will be on the 2020 caravan production, we were told that “Motorhomes will continue to be an integral part of our planned for range of expanded products. We are discussing some interesting ideas that will continue to show the ingenuity of our design and production teams going forward.”

Apart from a few dealers, the Lunar dealer network remains in place. The spokesman confirmed this, “We are very pleased to say that our dealer network remains strong and that apart from some small natural attrition we have retained our full dealer network capability, approximately 50 dealers.”

So, if you are a current Lunar owner and have any questions about aftersales and warranty work, your first point of contact will be your dealer as normal.

And plans for the future? “Immediate plans are to produce 2020 range with focus on exceptional build quality. Longer term intention will show very exciting products with our focus on utilising highly innovative engineering, design and manufacturing processes.”
