Ford and VW join forces to produce commercial vans
Ford and Volkswagen have signed agreements to expand their global alliance. They anticipate continued growth in demand for commercial vehicles and for electric vehicles too.
The alliance will see Ford build VW’s new Amarok pick-up as well as work together on a new smaller van based on the latest Caddy and a new Ford electric vehicle for Europe by 2023, which will be built on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive, or MEB, toolkit.
During the lifecycles of the vans, the companies expect to produce up to a combined eight million medium pick-ups and commercial vans.
Ford and Volkswagen both have a strong presence in the campervan and motorhome world with both supplying base vehicles into the industry as well as VW building its own California and Grand California models. The alliance does not include cross-ownership between the companies, which will remain competitors in the marketplace.
