Motorhome conversions: Top tipsA bespoke motorhome conversion from Denby

It's easy to get a motorhome converted (or adapted) to your own design. There are a whole host of companies out there that can build the motorhome of your dreams.

Companies vary from panel van conversion specialists to coachbuilders, offering only bepoke work to a standard range of new conversions that can be adpated.
  • Check a motorhome converters' website first. This offers insight into the converter and any previous motorhomes it has built.
  • Location, location, location: Even though we're now in the world of the internet, journeys cost time as well as money, so it might be better to look for a motorhome converter closer to your home. You may need to take the vehicle back for warranty/repair work or to have additioned fittings carried out
  • Don't just visit one converter. Meet a few to see how their advice both agrees and differs. One place to meet some of the companies in question is at our outdoor shows.
  • Make a few visits to the motorhome converter in question, to get a feel for the company and check on the progress of your conversion.
  • Agree a plan of action for payments, from initial deposit and stepped installments as and when each stage is completed.
  • Get as much in writing as possible. Verbal agreements can be open to interpreation and just plain forgetfulness on both sides.
  • Don't forget insurance - if you buy a panel van and intend to turn it into a camper, your insurance company will need to know and increase the value of the policy accordingly.
  • Remember, mainstream motorhome manufacturers benefit from economy of scale. You may save money on some aspects of the conversion, but might have to pay over the odds for key items like roofs, fridges, cookers and heaters.
  • As a motorhome tailored to your individual needs, it may not get as good a price as a standard motorhome, if you decide to trade it in.
  • Be prepared to listen to what a motorhome converter tells you, even if it is not what you want to hear. That way you'll find the ideal compromise between your dreams and what is actually achievable.
  • If your budget is tight you may be able to arrange with the converter to do some of the work yourselves and get the converter to do the specialist work like gas and electrical systems
  • Don't forget to ask about warranties. And get any agreements in writing.
