Electric bikes: The ultimate guide
Review in brief
The Cytronex is a kit consisting of a small front hub motor and a battery/control electronics ‘bottle’ that mounts on the frame.
- High-quality manufacture
- Original UK design packed with patented technology
- Light weight
- Small, less powerful motor compared to some
- Larger battery option would complete a great package
About Cytronex
Cytronex can fit the kit for you if you send it to the factory in Winchester or there are self-fitting options, too, for the keen DIY bike enthusiast or those with access to a good local bike shop.
About the Cytronex electric bike conversion kit
There are other Brompton-specific kits out there, but for my money the Cytronex is at the head of the pack for its simplicity, light weight and perky, efficient performance:
• Brompton specific kit
Cytronex makes a specific version for what is arguably the world’s best folding bike, the Brompton. The Brompton can be folded quickly to a compact, well secured package of 60cm by 59.5cm by 28cm and the lightest current production Brompton weighs around 10.5kg for an S2L-X (lightweight version with titanium components). Add a 3.2kg Cytronex kit to get a sub-14kg folding e-bike.
• How it works
Cytronex allies a small front hub motor with a plethora of original design features. Clever control software guarantees smooth power delivery and the neat, minimalist handlebar button indicates what power assist level you are in and the state of charge of the battery.
• Great quality
Above all it’s the high quality of manufacture that stands out, typified by the alloy casing of the bottle battery and the marine-grade stainless-steel lever-operated bottle release catch.
• Battery size
My only complaint is for a larger battery option than the 180Wh currently on offer.
