Overcab Bed Motorhomes

MMM editorial

The Verdict

More commonly associated with families, there coachbuilts are identified by a prominent overcab moulding. The overcab bed is a permanent fixture, which means no bed-making duties. They are not the most attractive motorhome design, but they are certainly practical with a double bed above the cab that can also be used to store lightweight items while travelling.

At a glance

The pros and cons of an overcab coachbuilt are:

  • Overcab provides extra beds or storage
  • Kids love overcab beds
  • Good resale values
  • Not the prettiest style of motorhome
  • Travel seats may not match berths
  • Wind resistance in headwinds

Full details

Often known as a luton overcab, motorhomes with overcab beds have a moulding above the cab that contains a double bed of varying sizes. Some manufacturers offer the option of having massive overcab cupboards instead

Many people say this massive lump over the cab affects fuel consumption by increasing drag, but this is not yet proven to necessarily be the case. If there is a fuel consumption difference, you have to weigh this against the efficiency and ease of having a ready-made bed always available, as well as plenty of room for other soft furnishings during transit.

If you plan to use your overcab as a family or multi-berth motorhome, then you need to check a few things, such as the set-up of the beds and the passenger-carrying capacity.

Make sure there are proper three-point seatbelts for all occupants, and headrests are advisable.

If you plan to use the overcab and the lounge dinette bed, check that access to and from the overcab bed is still possible with the dining room bed is made up.

As low-profile motorhomes have become more popular, so these overcab models have fallen slightly out of favour. This has especially become the case with the arrival of drop-down beds, which means you can have the best of both worlds but have a less bulky motorhome to drive.

That said, kids love sleeping above the cab, although if you allow them to sleep up there, make sure there is a safety net so they can't roll out and make sure they can use the ladder safely.
