A VW badge on the front of a campervan is all many people want and that's because that badge means great residuals, great engineering and fantastic conversions, whether by Volkswagen itself or by some respected independent converters now building campervans on the T5. But, be careful, some of these independent conversions are much better than others, so make sure you do your homework and are happy with the quality of the conversion. Some, but not many, coachbuilts also sit on the T5.At a glance

Volkswagen has made an enviable name for itself as the default manufacturer of choice for campervans
It now produces its own campervans that wear the California and more basic California Beach monikers. These come with a single VW warranty that covers both the conversion and the base vehicle and are sold through VW van dealerships. But don't just consider these, as there are hundreds (literally) of converters out there who build on new and used T5s.But be careful if you opt for an independent converter. While they are often cheaper than VW, they may not match its quality, so check the conversion and get feedback from previous customers before buying. Just because it has large alloy wheels and looks great on the road, it doesn't mean it is a great campervan!
But what should be assured is that the base vehicle - the T5 - is mechanically virtually bombproof, drives well, is very comfortable and has bags of 'street cred'.
Fact file - the Volkswagen T5
- Power train: Transverse TD engine (2.0-litre 84/102/114/140/180bhp), front-wheel and all-wheel drive
- Transmission: Five and six-speed manual or 7-speed DSG automatic
- Ride: Independent all-round suspension gives a ‘magic carpet’ ride on PVCs but wallows when under a coachbuilt.
- Warranty: 2 years comprehensive + 3rd year VW Van Centre managed
- Take care: Premium price for a lightweight chassis. Quite narrow, which can be either an advantage or a disadvantage. Spares can cost an arm and a leg
- Conversions: (Almost) every campervan converter who has drawn breath including. As for coachbuilt manufacturers, there are fewer but Auto-Sleepers still makes two evergreen VW-based high-tops
- The T5 comes with more options than you can shake a stick at and a more developed aftermarket accessory business than any other commercial vehicle.
